Chris Rock is still on board to host the Oscars this year despite calls for him to join the boycott protesting the Academy’s lack of diversity.

Variety had first reported Friday that sources said Rock would remain as host of the ceremony. Academy Awards producer Reginald Hudlin told Entertainment Tonight at Saturday’s NAACP Image Awards lunch that Rock’s opening monologue will address the #OscarsSoWhite conversation in a big way. Rock reportedly reworked his entire set of jokes when such figures as Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith announced they would be boycotting the ceremony.

“Chris is hard at work. He and his writing staff locked themselves in a room,” Hudlin told ET. “As things got a little provocative and exciting, he said, ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.'”

He added, “Chris is that thorough. He’s that brilliant, and I have 1000 percent confidence that he will deliver something that people will be talking about for weeks.”

Hudlin indicated that he and his team are prepared for Rock to make some controversial statements.

“And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that,” Hudlin said. “They’re excited about him doing that. They know that’s what we need. They know that’s what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want.”

Confirmation of Rock’s hosting duties come on the heels of the Academy’s Friday announcement that it would overhaul its membership in order to promote diversity, aiming to double its number of female and minority members by the year 2020.

  1. Bonnie Wilson says:

Chris Rock was obnoxious in his comments.

Let’s have him give an update on
Bill Cosby and others who were given
so many chances and abused other minorites, women!!

  2. Speedqueen says:

Chris Rock is really adding fuel to the fire with all of his racist comments! I’m so fed up with all the crappy racist remarks. Just host the ceremony & leave off all of your crazy remarks about whites & blacks! If a white person said all of that stuff…the battle would be on by all of the blacks. These comments are fueling the racist attitudes of America! Wake up, Hollywood…you just ignited the fire all over again by your choice of host! Stop with the race card already!

  3. disciple4all says:

Let’s be realistic. There are 14% Blacks in this country and about the same percentage of actors in Hollywood. No race is more or less talented than any other. So, by numbers alone, there should be 1 in 7 awards going to blacks or 28% to minority. If there are 5 nominees for best actor, that doesn’t necessitate that one will be black nor does it even necessitate that one would even be a minority. And when you get to the executive positions like directors or producers, there is a far less percentage as well, so we should expect an award going top them to often. I suppose think Spike Lee is on the level of Steven Spielberg or James Cameron? lol. Will Smith is a very good actor, but he’s not great. That said, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruz are very good actors — but they’re aren’t great. In Jerry Maguire, Tom didn’t get a nomination but Cuba Gooding won best supporting actor. Why? He’s better. Many blacks and minorities as a whole have been awarded Oscars and in time many more will. Peace!

  4. Anthony Taranto says:

Chris Rock= You should do your monologue in “white face stating that you had to in order to get in the door. Say no more about it the rest of the night and life will go on, much better for all

  5. Jaddy Baddy says:

On the other hand…don’t think of it as a boycott,
think of it as a boycopportunity for some fresh
faces in Hollywood to take Will’s and Jada’s and
Spike’s and Clooney’s seat and hob and nob for
a week with real filmmakers. Who knows, maybe
one or two of these fresh New faces will get a
chance to make movies people will actually Want
    to see.

  6. Axe says:

Why is nobody mentioning the preponderance of foreign acting nominees over the years? Why no uproar over that? A full ten out of the twenty acting nominees this year were born outside the U.S. with five of them nominated for playing Americans.
Maybe there is an anti-American bias among the Academy?

  7. Desert Fox says:

This strikes me more of the entitlement mentality. Scream loud enough and they’ll give it to you shut you up.

  8. Teresa says:

I just can’t help but think…that maybe they didn’t pull their weights well as they could have??? & suddenly it’s wrong NOT to pick them because the oth rr mom’s did better!?!? Sorry I don’t understand Jada & Wesley’so logic!?

  9. Margaret says:

Does Jade Pinkett Smith feel the NFL is too Black. Shall we boycott the Super Bowl ?

    • Angel Powers says:

So not watching any more of this garbage tonight! Speaking of the Super bowl halftime garbage, didn’t watch then, either. Wake up America…how would you feel if every time an African American robbed, stabbed, shot or vandalized the public it was broadcast on every major network & radio show? The point is, tensions would continue to boil over. This is what is happening on the Oscars tonight! Trash & garbage spilling over to the American Family. Wake up America! Speak up for your choices & what you will toletate! Stop playing the race card, Hollywood!

    • Deena says:

Go on somewhere with your racist ass. There are clearly an abundance of ethnicities that play ALL sports and yes including football. The difference is you probably couldnt name five african Americans or minority in general that have won an academy in the last 5 years. You probably also don’t see a problem with all first 48 presidents being white and you probably also wondered why people were so concerned about obama being black. That’s the problem, many people fail to put themselves in the shoes of what black people go through daily and write it off ass us having a pity party. Somewhere there a young black girl or boy who wants to be in film looking at the awards and not seeing a reflection of his or herself. But that doesn’t bother you. I personally don’t think we should care about gaining acceptance from a crowd of people who clearly don’t want black people to have anything. Not even a trophy that says “good job”. People like you.

      • David says:

that is such horse shit, I will tell you something, earn it don’t expect it. See how much racism is in armed forces (I have and they are my brothers regardless of color or background). This entitlement mentality is creating racism not building bridges. Obama won the presidency and he has caused more divide in this country then any other president in our history, or this would not be happening. I have my favorite actors and actresses and guess what they are of all color, creed, and backgrounds, I applaud their art not skin. And that includes sexual orientation, and for the record I am against gay and whatever it is called nowadays. If the black community wants to start boycotting then we can do the same, and tell is it ok to have a WET awards show white entertainment TV award, like BET, NO because that would be racist. The only American group that is OK to make fun of or ridicule is white heterosexual males why is that because of White privilege? Get off your high horses and start acting like Americans not white Americans, Black Americans, etc. Americans or there will be such a backlash you will loose all that Dr King helped gain.

  10. Burro b says:

Hey black folks. Don’t watch. Who cares ??? You are still gonna work and take money. Act in better movies. Take serious roles unlike barbershop , madea , Compton ( stop with the nonsense ; good movie and acting but get real). Sick of you hypocrites and your fake social crap

  11. Dan Johnson says:

Rock will make a bunch of anti white jokes and the oscars audience will laugh and congratulate themselves on how tolerant they are by having a black host.

  12. Bob says:

    “Diversity” is minorities only club.

  13. Bob says:

Rock will make plenty of white jokes with no repercussions.

  14. Jeff says:

It is probably a political move – he stays in place so he can emphasize the cause of those that are not there. He will make a push for affirmative action for actors – lololol.

  15. David Powell says:

Good on him for being a professional.

  16. Scott Higgins says:

And a Chris Rock monologue about diversity is different how??

  17. dave says:

    Who cares about these perverts?

  18. Bill Williams says:

If a comic hosts a show in the woods that nobody bothers to watch, did it really happen?

  19. Duude says:

    Uncle Tom Rock

  20. Malik Ojibdobo says:

Chris Rock is one of the biggest racists out there. White people watching him is akin to blacks watching a KKK ‘comedy’ routine. No thanks, I would rather wash the cat.

  21. Bill B. says:

I don’t look forward to seeing him host this. Was really hoping he’d quit the gig.

  22. Lisa says:

Who cares. Phony awards to phony people and a phony controversy.

  23. says:

Do away with the Oscars and give everyone a participation trophy.

  24. Alex says:

Now that some people expect to be nominated what will happen if they don’t win? They’ll still complain about an all white jury.

    • Robert Vasquez says:

Would you want to be evaluated by an all African American or Latino or Asian jury if you’re not a member of that group? Would you think it fair, especially if some of those jury members allowed any negative stereotypes about people in your group to affect their decision-making process? Would you “complain” if this routinely happened year after year? If you have sense of dignity and self-esteem, of course you would complain even to the point of boycotting make known how such a phenomenon negatively affects people like you.

      • Lucifer says:

Year after year? This is only the second year in a row (of recent years) that all the acting nominations are white.

Why not just give everyone a reward? Works in Little League and other child activities. No one is hurt. (Note my sarcasm)

  27. Bob Morton says:

I don’t think it’s right that a certain group of actors will now automatically get nominated each year regardless of whether they were good or not, just to appease an angry mob of ‘non-whites’.

    • Robert Vasquez says:

Sadly, your comment typifies the ingrained nature of institutional racism: You assume all whites who get nominated or who win Oscars deserve such recognitions whereas any non-whites only get nominated or win due to their skin color. Essentially, you’re saying whites deserve their nominations and wins but people of color don’t. Any industry or organization that’s controlled by mainly white people has built-in, unofficial Affirmative Action for other white people: they mainly identify with the people who look like themselves, who are similar to their close friends and business associates. Rare indeed are whites who have close friendships with many people of color–that’s why when people of color march or protest, few whites join them.

  28. joe9999 says:

can’t wait to hear all the racist white jokes. think i will be skipping it again just like the last 15 years.

  30. dieter says:

The Oscars Show is for low info people that engage in no endeavors in their lives that are genuinely mentally stimulating and beneficial so to make up for the emptiness they live through mindless celebrities…that’s why so many will vote for their demise just to get “free” phones and birth control pills.

    • Sammie says:

I’m afraid you are correct on all counts and who cares what chris rock thinks or says or any of the other so-called celebs.

  31. dieter says:

    who gives a cr_p?

  32. Leftyamigo says:

So interesting that the Liberal left in Hollywood can’t blame the white Republicans. They are exposing their own hypocritical rants. Typical do what I say not what I do we have come to expect.

  33. Rudy Mario says:

This is turning out to be very comical. What were the blacks, asians, hispanics, native Americans doing all these years ? Living in an alternate reality? The Oscars has always been about the anglo, the Jew and the other whites all along. It is also a fact since theamatically the vast majority of movies are about these peoples, the overwhelming nominations and wins will be these peoples. You peopkes will have slim chance, it is just a statistical reality.

Of course the Stat is further skewed like in this year. While “Straight Outta..” was fine but not top notch it should have at least been nominated. But the Academy could let their geriayric anglo man who made that Mad Max movie die without at least a nomination. Plus it made the all white academy blood pressure go up to see in that movie plump lactating white mamas have their udders pumped. Oh how smart and uplifting. So a b grade Mad Max gets in while a B+ Crompton gets ignored. Simple as that.

Now you peoples stop whining and get b ack to work

  34. How many Armenians were nominated? Were any druids nominated? How about people with physical disabilities, who speaks for them? Race baiting has never been more prominent. Everybody’s a racist.
Affirmative action does not apply in the Oscar race.

  35. Robert Vasquez says:

When 94% of the Academy is white, few people of color will ever be nominated for or win Oscars. Let me use an analogy: If a hiring committee is 94% Caucasian, the make-up of that committee will favor white candidates at the expense of equally qualified candidates of color. If 94% of the Academy were Latino or African American or Asian, wouldn’t the nominees look different, especially if these groups also controlled the majority of the film production companies? What’s evident is that the film industry and it’s products often promote an overwhelmingly white-oriented world that doesn’t mirror the truly diverse world many of experience on and daily basis. One way to correct this segregated phenomenon is to limit Academy members to four-year memberships and to require all potential members to be actively employed in the film industry: the average age of current Academy members is 62. This would encourage film industry members to continue working: Who would want to be evaluated by others who are no longer in the trenches?

  37. Jimmie says:

So is Chris saying other lives matter?

  38. vince says:

    Green is Rock’s favorite color.

  39. Why would Rock pass up an opportunity to tell the Hollyweird hypocrites how racist they are? The mindless pseudo-moral elitists being bitten by their own PC Prog dog. I might even tune in for a change.

  40. This comes a no surprise. Chris Rock is one of the biggest racists out there and still he’ll sell out his own race. Whether you agree with that’s what it is or not, they do. The rich have no soul. It’s easier to pull a camel through the eye of a needle then to get a rich man into heaven and this is a perfect illustration why.

  41. I say give a token black an award in every category.

  42. co2islife says:

Only liberals world promote policies the divide this nation and get people to hate them for their skin color. I’ve seen some pretty stupid liberal social movements in my time, mostly directed at undermining the Conservative Agenda, but getting people to hate white people because of their “privileged,” takes the cake. What is this really about however? It is all smoke and mirrors to distract from the fact that 8 years into the term of America first ultra-liberal black president the backs are rioting in the streets. BLM is the greatest symbol of the complete and utter failure of Obama and the progressive liberal agenda. Obama didn’t even stop the climate from changing or close Gitmo.

  43. agcala says:

Great. Do not buy the Affirmative Action Oscars. If they want an Oscar they have to sweat their asses for it.

  44. neemsemmi says:

Just imagine all this was started by Kermit the frog!

  45. joeycee says:

Hollywood people are the worst people in the world

  46. Andrew says:

He may not be boycotting it, but what is Chris Rock actually going to say? Yes, I am sure he will address the subject, I don’t think anyone doubts that, but in what fashion will he do so? He is quite an intelligent man, and an undeniable wit. Will he engage in light-hearted banter and soothe the pressure that the academy is under, or will he opt instead for an opening monologue full of humiliating sarcasm before walking out and leaving them without a host? He is capable of both, and you really can’t do much about it except turn his mike off if he starts going down an unpleasant road. Ultimately though, there would be no way to salvage the evening after that. The damage would be done.

While there are MANY extraordinarily talented people of color in the movie industry, the fact still remains that there have not been any movies of color which stand out as exceptional in a very long time. That is the biggest reason why you haven’t seen any nominees of color lately. Is there racism in the Academy? Of course. There is racism everywhere. We like to pretend we are past it, and we are really good at acting like we are, but the truth is that we are human beings and making visually-based judgments about others is an inseperable part of human nature. Whether those judgments are rational, correct, or warranted, is beside the point and secondary to them being made. We can not help it, it is the kind of creature we are. The best we can ever hope for is to be able to recognize when those judgments are irrational and unwarranted, and compensate for them. This will always be after the fact though, so our sensitivity to them needs to be at a level which allows that compensation to be done with grace. Right now there is no graceful way for the Academy to deal with this issue. There is no graceful way for the public to deal with it. It is all confrontational. Problems rarely get solved satisfactorily through confrontational means. Not permanently, anyway.

Perhaps it is time for simply abandoning the Academy Awards entirely. It is a closed and self-regulating system, which by its very organizational structure renders the award itself meaningful only in an egotistical sense. It isn’t *ALL* film industry people bestowing the awards, nor is it *ALL* films and actors qualifying for consideration. It is only “members” of the academy, and “member” films which the “members” decide should be included. It is a good old boys club. So it was never intended to be fair or inclusive from the beginning. It was designed to be self-congratulatory, and to create an artificial sense of social strata within the industry. It was never really about the films anyway.

    • BillUSA says:

That is one of the most well-thought-out and impressively written examinations of racism I have read in a very long time. I, too, have always held a scientific viewpoint about this issue and others. Our very survival depended upon our ability to visually recognize and to differentiate friend from foe. Just because our species travels to the Moon and other wonderful technological strides doesn’t mean that the animal in us has gone away.

  47. Krusatyr says:

Even Howood knows ghetto-rap-noir subculture is not ‘art’: it can only at most be ‘context’, a distinction that eludes entitlement minded race merchants.

  48. j harris says:

just like liberal run cities they will kill the oscars as well…

  49. Grapost says:

The Diversity Police are at it again. Blacks make up on 13% of the USA population. They make up only 1% of the Actors in the country.
Why should movies and TV shows have 50% Black actors when they only make up 1% of the actors in the industry?
Their low numbers in the industry are the reason for their low representation in receiving awards. It has nothing to do with Racism.
Why should 1% of any occupation be elevated to an importance level above the majority of those in the same industry.
What the Diversity Police and calling for is basically a QUOTA system. Oh their must be at least one Black person nominated each year or we’ll raise hell and claim your organization is racist and ruin your reputation.

  50. Mark says:

how many white people were represented at the NAACP Image Awards? oh yeah……that isn’t an issue. the hypocrisy is astounding.
