The BBC television special that marks the beginning of the fourth season of the hit Benedict Cumberbatch- and Martin Freeman-starring series, was given a market-leading 37,600 screenings Monday, according to data from Ent Group. That implies a per screen average of $433 on the day.
“Abominable Bride” narrowly beat “Detective Chinatown,” which earned $5.01 million on its sixth day on release.
The success of “Abominable Bride” and the width of its release are testament to the popularity of Cumberbatch in the Middle Kingdom. The “Sherlock” TV series was a major hit for online video giant Youku Tudou in 2014.
The deal to release the TV special as a theatrical feature in China was announced in October last year when BBC Worldwide, the British Broadcasting Corporation’s commercial arm, signed a multi-faceted deal with Chinese state-backed Shanghai Media Group. The “Sherlock” release is handled by SMG Pictures.
The series was produced by Hartswood Films, with Fathom Entertainment distributor for its theatrical outing.
