The spotlight on Hosoda is part of the festival’s recently introduced animation focus. Hosoda became well-known through “Summer Wars” (2009) and “Wolf Children” (2012) which were local and international hits. Last year his “The Boy and the Beast,” became the highest-grossing Japanese film of the year at the Japanese box office. France’s Gaumont is handling international sales on the picture.
Iwai has dabbled with animation, but recently returned to live-action film making. His best-known films include “Love Letter” (1995,) “All About Lily Chou-Chou” (2001) and “Hana and Alice” (2004). His most recently completed film is “A Bride for Rip Van Winkle.”
