YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Veteran stage and screen actress Stockard Channing has put her Los Angeles residence up for sale at $1.895 million. Property records show Miz Channing, still remembered for her saucy turn as Betty Rizzo in the 1978 movie musical “Grease” and currently holding down a plum recurring role on the political drama “The Good Wife,” purchased the property in September 2003 for $1.075 million. Miz Channing, a showbiz tour de force with a career that spans five decades, has racked up three Golden Globe nominations and a total of 14 Daytime and Primetime Emmy nominations. (She won two Emmys in 2002, for “The West Wing” and “The Matthew Shepard Story,” and again in 2004 for “Jack.”) She was nominated for an Academy Award in 1993 for the film “Six Degrees of Separation,” a role she originated on Broadway and earned her one of her seven Tony nominations. (She won the Tony in 1985 for “Joe Egg” and was most recently nominated last year for her lead role in the riveting family drama “Other Desert Cities.”)
Hidden behind a house co-owned, per property records, by Rumer Willis and Ashton Kutcher, Miz Channing’s arguably humble if hardly inexpensive abode is privately situated down a long, three-shaded driveway on a generous, 0.75-acre hillside parcel with panoramic views over Laurel Canyon. With just two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the 2,196-square-foot house, a single-level ranch-style situation built in 1950, features loads of honey-hued custom built-ins that may or may not be original to the home. Low cabinets flank a red brick fireplace in the living room that’s large enough to accommodate a second seating area anchored by an L-shaped built-in banquette set into a generously windowed corner. The adjoining dining room, which opens through glass doors to a roomy terrace that spans nearly the full width of the rear of the residence, has a glass-fronted built-in buffet asymmetrically tucked into a niche next to a raised, red-brick-ringed fireplace fitted with iron doors. The somewhat oddly and awkwardly wedge-shaped kitchen, described in listing details as “smartly done,” has a combination of wood and stainless-steel cabinetry, jet-black countertops, and average-grade stainless-steel appliances. A wide set of glass doors provides convenient access to the rear terrace, and there is, inexplicably as far as this property gossip is concerned, a tiny television mounted from the ceiling over the sink. Can we not even wash the damn dishes without having our face glued to the boob-toob? But we digress….
The lone guest room opens to the main terrace along the rear of the residence and features a complete wall of floor-to-ceiling built-ins that incorporates clothing storage, desk space, enclosed storage and open book shelves, while the master bedroom, which opens to a small private deck at the side of the house, includes a built-in dresser and desk area set into side by side niches. The master bathroom, painted seal gray and upgraded with cork tile flooring, appears to retain some original details such as the etched glass shower door that depicts a deer lapping water from a stream.
Miz Channing, who will soon appear as the legendary Elizabeth Taylor in the anticipated half-hour British comedy “Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon,” about a road trip, according to unconfirmed urban legend, that Taylor, Michael Jackson and Marlon Brando allegedly embarked on after the 9/11 attacks, also maintains a 16.5-acre semi-remote rural spread on scenic Georgetown Island, about an hour’s drive northeast of Portland, Maine.
