Two new releases nab top spots on DVD, Blu-ray Disc charts

The home video debut of 20th Century Fox’s brainy sci-fi epic “The Martian” blasted off the week ended Jan. 17, rocketing to the top spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Directed by Ridley Scott, “The Martian” has enjoyed both critical and commercial success, grossing $227.3 million at the domestic box office and earning one of the two recent Golden Globe awards for Best Picture.

Twentieth Century Fox already touted “The Martian” as being the fastest-selling live-action Digital HD title ever, selling 1 million copies in just three weeks following its Dec. 22 online release.

Sony Pictures’ “Hotel Transylvania 2” debuted at No. 2 on both disc sales charts and topped Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week. The animated sequel earned $169.3 million domestically, $21 million more than the first movie, and sold 91.6% as many total copies as “The Martian.”

The previous week’s top seller, the Lionsgate crime drama “Sicario,” dropped to No. 3 overall and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.

Sony Pictures’ faith-based “War Room” dropped a slot to No. 4 overall, with the Universal Pictures horror sequel “Sinister 2” debuting at No. 5.

On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, “Star Wars: The Original Trilogy” was No. 3 and “Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy” was No. 5, still drafting off the massive theatrical success of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Other new releases in the Top 20 overall include BBC’s Sherlock: The Abominable Bride at No. 8 and Paramount’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension at No. 11.

Nielsen VideoScan data shows that among the new releases, “The Martian” generated the highest percentage of unit sales from Blu-ray Disc (59%), followed by “Hotel Transylvania 2” (52%), “Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension” (44%) and “Sinister 2” (40%).

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Sicario” slipped to No. 5 after debuting at No. the previous week. Lining up behind top rental “Hotel Transylvania 2” were three films that have just come off their month-long holdbacks from Redbox: Universal Pictures’ “Ted 2” at No. 2 and, from 20th Century Fox, “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” at No. 3 and “Fantastic Four” (2015) at No. 4.
