Consumers interested in picking up a PlayStation VR headset when it starts shipping in October can get in line early next week: Sony is opening up limited pre-orders for its virtual reality headset on March 22.
As part of a pre-order package, Sony is offering the PlayStation VR headset itself, as well as the PlayStation Camera and the PlayStation Move controllers as a bundle for $499. Also included in the package is the game PlayStation VR Worlds.
Sony announced earlier this week that it will start to sell PlayStation VR for $399 this October. That price doesn’t include the camera or controllers. But even as a bundle, the headset is still significantly cheaper than the competition: The HTC Vive VR headset costs $799 with controllers, and the Oculus Rift costs $599 without controllers.
Both headsets are being sold with positional tracking devices, but both do require powerful high-end gaming PCs that cost $1000 or more. PlayStation VR on the other hand works in conjunction with a PlayStation 4, which costs around $350. Sony has sold some 36 million PlayStation 4s to consumers worldwide since launching the game console at the end of 2013.
