Periscope Integrates with GoPro to Stream Action Cam Footage

Periscope streams are about to get a lot more animated: The Twitter-owned social live streaming service announced an integration with GoPro Tuesday, allowing users to stream footage live from their action cam.

The integration is so far limited to select hardware: Users need a GoPro HERO 4 camera, as well as an iPhone to make live streams work. There’s no word on when the functionality will be extended to Android phones.

Still, the integration is interesting, as it allows Periscope broadcasters to more easily tap into the power of semi-professional recording gear. Live action shots are an obvious use case, but one could also imagine broadcasters using a GoPro as a kind of studio camera rig for social live streaming.

It’s worth noting that Periscope isn’t the first live streaming service to utilize GoPros this way. Its competitor Meerkat announced a similar collaboration with GoPro last July.
