Amazon Prime to Stream New Matsumoto Comedy Series

TOKYO – Amazon is to broadcast a new show for Japan starring megastar comic Hitoshi Matsumoto. It will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Called “Documental,” the program is a four-part variety series developed by Matsumoto. Ten comics compete for a grand prize of $90,000 (JPY10 million) by trying to make each other laugh. The one who keeps the straightest face the longest, while forcing his ‘opponents’ to break down in giggles and guffaws, is the winner. Streaming will start on Nov. 30 and continue with new episodes every Wednesday.

Matusmoto is best known abroad as a director of idiosyncratic comedy films, including “Big Man Japan,” “Symbol,” “R100” and “Scabbard Samurai.” In Japan he has been omnipresent on national TV for more than two decades as a variety show host and part of the comic duo “Downtown.”
