HPA to Honor Veteran Post-Production Executive Herb Dow With Lifetime Achievement Award

HPA Honors Herb Dow With Lifetime

The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has named Herb Dow recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award. Dow will receive the honor during the HPA Awards gala on November 17 at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles.

The HPA honor recognizes individuals for their service to the professional media content industry. It is given at the discretion of the HPA Awards Committee and is not bestowed every year.

“From his early days as a television editor to today as an executive helping bring editing to the cloud, Herb Dow has been a dedicated post-production professional for 50 years,” said HPA president Seth Hallen. “On top of that, he is one of the most beloved individuals in our industry and has spent his entire career helping build our community.”

Dow began as an apprentice editor at Desilu Studios, progressing to film editor. His credits span many decades and include projects for MGM, Warner Bros, Lorimar, Fox, Paramount, Columbia, and Universal.

Segueing from the role of editor to post-production technologist and executive, Dow is considered by many to be the “godfather” of nonlinear editing, pioneering the design and implementation of the Ediflex, one of the first and most popular of the pre-digital nonlinear editing systems.

As Ediflex grew, Dow helped build the company as a force in the industry. In 1986, he and the team at Ediflex won a Technical Emmy Award for design and implementation of electronic editing for filmed programs.

Dow also helped build Encore Nonlinear into the world’s largest Avid editing system rental business. And as senior VP of Lightworks, he began a lasting connection with future filmmakers by donating over 30 editing systems to film schools across the U.S.

Dow then helped create a visual effects division at Encore Video and within 12 months the unit was creating effects for such shows as “Ally McBeal”, “The X-Files” and “Charmed.” He was also SVP of the world’s largest fiber network, Media.net.

Dow is currently working with Bebop Technology to transition post-production to a cloud environment.

“Herb Dow has not only been the face of technology that has enhanced the creative process, he has been the heart of our community as well,” said Leon Silverman, past president of HPA and recipient of last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

“To have been selected for this honor means so much to me and to my family,” said Dow. “After working as an apprentice, assistant, and finally editor, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to become part of the technical revolution that changed editing.”
