Michelle Collins, a comedienne who has appeared on Bravo and VH1, will join ABC’s “The View” as a co-host, according to a person familiar with the program, marking the latest talent change at the mature morning-TV staple.
Collins’ hiring is set to be announced on the show at a future date, this person said. Actress Rosie Perez, who joined the program as a co-host in September of last year, bid audiences farewell during Wednesday’s broadcast of the show.
The arrival of Collins will mark the newest shift in what has become a revolving-door panel at the program, which launched in 1997 under the aegis of Barbara Walters. While host Whoopi Goldberg has been a steadfast member of the program, a gambit to add Rosie O’Donnell to the mix for a second time proved to be a misfire and Perez and co-host Nicole Wallace have come under scrutiny as well.
Raven-Symoné, the actress best known for her stints on “The Cosby Show” and “That’s So Raven,” was named a co-host of the program last month.
The ultimate direction of “The View” has been unclear since ABC shifted supervision of the program to its ABC News division last fall. The veteran program has suffered from lackluster ratings in recent years, and has churned through hosts, including Sherri Shepard and Jenny McCarthy.
Goldberg, who first joined the program in 2007, has been anchor as veterans like Walters and Joy Behar have decamped for retirement and other projects.
