‘Supergirl’ Costume Revealed: First Photos of Melissa Benoist as CBS Superhero

Supergirl

Supergirl” has finally arrived.

The first photos of Melissa Benoist in costume as Supergirl were released Friday, just as production begins on the CBS pilot, which is based on characters from DC Comics.

The costume (pictured) was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the suits for two other DC Comics television properties, “The Flash” and “Arrow” of the CW.

Atwood, who’s been nominated for Academy Awards an additional eight times, was also the costume designer behind “Into the Woods,” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Chicago,” among others.

“Supergirl,” in contention for the 2015-16 season, follows Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Benoist, “Glee,” “Whiplash”), Superman’s cousin, at age 24, when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be, after leaving Krypton and hiding her powers.

Other series regulars include Calista Flockhart (“Ally McBeal,” “Brothers & Sisters”), who will play Kara’s tough boss at CatCo, Cat Grant; Mehcad Brooks (“Desparate Housewives,” “True Blood”), who will co-star as Kara’s love interest, Jimmy Olsen; Chyler Leigh (“Grey’s Anatomy”), who’s been cast as Kara’s doctor sister, Alex Danvers; and David Harewood (“Homeland”), as supervillain Hank Henshaw, better known as Cyborg Superman in the DC Comics world.

Laura Benanti will appear in a major recurring arc, playing Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El.

Helen Slater, who starred in the 1984 “Supergirl” feature, and Superman vet Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”) are set for secret roles.

The project hails from exec producers and writers Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”), Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. Sarah Schechter will also serve as an exec producer, and Glen Winter will direct the pilot. Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television will produce.

  1. Ray Harrison says:

    It was absolutely amazing

  2. Truest Fan of Kara Zor-El says:

Saw the preview. Melissa looks like she might be able to pull off a nice Supergirl, but that uniform!…. It is an ugly shade of dark blue, and it’s horribly and anciently configured. The preview first shows Melissa in the traditional miniskirt, and it looks GREAT! Then the “permanent” outfit is shown, and it’s horrible. What is she, a grandmother? Let’s not forget who originally made Supergirl so popular, it was FANBOYS. We like the miniskirt (and it looks like Melissa has the legs for it). In fact, Michael Turner’s version of the costume would be best, especially as it is drawn by Ed Benes and Ian Churchill. Forget what’s “politically correct” and please give us what we want……a Supergirl who’s not only bright and sweet and adorable, but also beautiful and quietly sexy. Otherwise it is indeed possible that there won’t be enough interest in the show, no matter how good the rest of it is. It’s too bad this is not 1992, because Kristy Swanson would have been PERFECT for the part (with her green eyes changed to blue), but with the right uniform, it looks like Melissa could possibly be good in the part.

  3. Reality check people. Supergirl is a fictitious character, she is not real, blond, brunette or redhead, in the big picture, it does not matter

  4. Jasonx5 says:

Does anybody cast in a major role have and “IT” factor anymore. This woman looks like a complete bore and horribly miscast, just like that Adriane Palicki girl they cast as Wonder Woman a couple of years ago. And what do they have against bright vivid color? Why does every superhero outfit now look as if it had been stored in a dark dingy castle, in a box for a 100 years?

  5. Miguel E. Garza says:

You actually have a mistake on Kara’s last name. It is simply EL. Jor el was Superman’s father, Kara’s uncle. Zor el was her father, Superman is Kal el. All from the house of el. In the DC comics, Kara was considered an orphan, under the name of Linda Lee, where she wasadopted by the Danvers.

  6. LOL These photos look nothing like Melissa Benoist. I couldn’t even recognize her.

  7. Jeremy says:

This isn’t going to be good.. They nerfed supergirl… What’s with theeg warmers and her hair? Kara Zorel is a blonde. BLEACH BLONDE. I for one will not watch this. Total butcher of suoergirl. The girl from smallville would’ve looked better…

  8. Lin. Woods says:

I’m a huge Superman fan. It will be interesting to see what Supergirl has to offer fans of Superman.

  9. stuckonwords says:

“…not the one they’re making the series about.” You get the idea.

  10. stuckonwords says:

@CharlesDodgen…this superhero was named many decades ago. If they call her SuperWoman, she would be a new superhero, not the one they’re making the movie about.

  11. Charles Dodgen says:

Why is a female, who is an adult, should be a woman, is still consider a girl. Why is still a male chauvinistic system still exist.

  12. xstr8edgex says:

They need to stop changing characters from white to black just to appease ridiculous people and in hopes of having more black people watch their shows. In no universe has Jimmy Olsen ever been black.

  13. Ana says:

Not liking the actor who will play her love interest or the sister. The guy is like in his mid thirties and she is like 26 almost 10 year difference. Just doesn’t look good. ugh!!

  14. Richard says:

Come on! That costume screams Super Boring! Women will still hate her and men will won’t be interested. It’s science.

  15. Adam says:

Sorry but this show won’t last more than half a season.

  16. bill says:

    u sure it’s not a Supermom?

  17. Fre says:

Marvel and DC….. I’m weary they’re putting out too much product and very well might be taking the ‘Super’ from Superheros.
Quality over Quantity. Don’t shoot yourselves in the feet, your already aiming, careful.

  18. Ra says:

I would have loved to have seen them cast a true natural beauty who could appears sans makeup, setting a new trend.

  19. issac banks says:

awesome a supergirl would make love to me
    this so awesome

  20. kenneth davies says:

It hits the scene right alluring but not overtly provocative

  21. Minnie says:

    I smell mid-season cancellation…

  22. Bill Chan says:

I think maybe the photographer used to the wrong lens. It looks like her head is bigger than her torso. She does look fit for the part (sometimes you see an actress and you were like what? ie. new wonderwoman)

  23. Curt says:

Looks great, much better than the Flash and Arrow costumes.

  24. jimbob says:

Needs to be blonder and lose the tights.. in what universe is super girl a brunette?

    • Aaron Kelley says:

The tights make sense and she’s Strawberry blonde which pay homage to both Supergirl and Matrix who went by the name of Supergirl for a number of years when Kara was thought dead. I like the Strawberry blonde look.

      • TinyTim says:

I’m glad they put her in tights. It adds a certain amount of feminine that Supergirl needs.

  25. Mark says:

She’s a great choice but she needs to b much more blonde to stand out. She coloured her hair lighter especially for the role. Not light enough, right now it looks a bit blah

  26. Ang says:

Yes the actress is gorgeous. However I fear this show may suffer at CBS. The network may not give it the chance it deserves and it may be dead out of the water. It is not known for giving shows a chance. Just hope for Melisa, she can “fly” past this when it dies.

  27. poprocker1 says:

Reblogged this on Pop Rocking Culture and commented:
A skirt for a flying hero. Really? And as much as I like Colleen Atwood’s work, this costume is rather boring.

  28. Richard says:

    oh shut up.

  29. lorne says:

i just hope its as good as arrow or the flash or gotham. and not as bad as agent carter or marvels agents of shield. cbs is the land of middle of the road crime dramas. key thing is time slot.
can you just picture the meeting. ” darn we need a super hero show every network has one or 2 now where is ours !!!! “. every trend is beat to death and this super hero trend is getting old fast.

    • Arrow became horrible (although entertaining in it’s stupidity) after first season, Gotham is consistently meh, Agents of Shield started weak but got awesome after Winter Soldier movie and stayed that way ever since. Can agree about Carter and Flash though.

    • Flash is good, Arrow is boring, haven’t seen Gotham. Just wish these shows would cut some of the background soap opera drama and closed circle relationships. It’s modern TV I guess.

      • I disagree totally. Both Arrow and The Flash are awesome. Marvel Agents of Shield is amazing as well. I think the CW really does the superhero thing very well.

  30. John says:

She is FAR to skinny. What is the matter with having a healthy looking young female in a television show these days? In this case she is supposed to be a superhero from another planet. Can you imagine Superman with the physic of D.J. Qualls? I think not!!!

    • Brad says:

Far too skinny for what? To be a girl? It’s “Supergirl” not Super MMA Fighter. What is with every actress being cast in these roles being body shamed!? DJ Qualls? Seriously!? Not even close to a fair comparison. But how about Christopher Reeve; The most iconic and revered live action Superman we have. Not exactly a brick sh*t house. Pretty thin.

  31. Let’s be clear – Benoist is gorgeous, and she’ll be outstanding in this. Anything else is an ossification of your soul, and your manhood.

  32. Angel Flores says:

Oh and that was in no way about this actress or her ability that was directed at costuming.

  33. Kellen Lynch says:

As my wife can attest to, I am super-picky about TV/Film super hero costumes, and I don’t hate this. I actually might like it more than Cavil’s Superman costume.

  34. Angel Flores says:

This is some buuuulllllssssshhhhiiiiii………… All The Amazing revamps on sup on bats hell even on queen and streaky and u give us 1950s super girl wtf!!!!!!!

  35. Laverne McGee (@firstcoyote) says:

Here we go, fanboys clamoring for big boobs. She’s Supergirl, guys, not Super Stripper.

  36. DISASTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-NOT SEXY

  37. Wasn’t she bad enough on Glee? Did they really have to let her ruin Supergirl, too?

    • Defective says:

Assuming that she’s going to ruin. Why don’t you wait until the show comes out before passing judgment? Thanks!

      • lorne says:

yeah remember when people didnt like battlestar. and it was amazing. the lower the expectations the better it seems.

  38. White bear says:

All tho she dose look good but i still think the original supergirl looks better aka Helen Slater ;)

  39. Florian Schmid says:

… I’ve seen Nuns with more clevage, then again it’s CBS and you probably don’t want to give the 95% of viewers (who are age 80 and above) a heart attack

  40. Defective says:

I was curious as to what costume of Supergirl we’d be getting. In all honest I was hoping for the midriff exposing outfit, but I really like the design on this one. Besides all that, I’m really excited for this show to air and hope it does well.

  41. Tv Troz says:

    Underwhelming

  42. Mike says:

I’m not sure if a “Plain Jane” would make a good Super Girl..

  43. SciFiBob says:

Let’s see if this show can have as an entertaining a super-hero flying character as “The Greatest American Hero” did.

  44. Rebecca says:

Where are her muscles? Only superman gets abs? I am glad to see lady superheros, but they need to have a grand physique, right? I mean, fine, ladies need to wear a skirt, or we would assume that she is a guy, but can’t she get some molded plastic Pilates abs sewn into the suit like the guys?

  45. Chuck Peters says:

I like that it feels closer to “Man of Steel” than others I’ve seen. Hopefully where this show will succeed is dealing with being a person with such immense power; the power of a God, as it were and learning how to be responsible with that power.

    • davrem says:

If I remember my comics correctly (and it was decades ago, so I might not), Superman shaved by using his heat vision in a mirror.
      Anybody else remember that?

      • Roger says:

I believe it depends on WHICH comic you read. I also remember that he shaved with his heat vision, and i BELIEVE dean cain did the same thing in Lois and Clark. OR in another version, His hair dosen’t grow at all

  46. Vinko Milić says:

This TV is totally awesome!!! We want this in Latin America in a few months on Warner Channel. Also, we want a reissue on DVD or Blu-Ray of the movie, and a remake movie, as a trilogy. Yep, totally awesome!!!

  47. roger the alien says:

cheap and basic, perfect for crappy television

  48. Jacob F Keller says:

Wow. I think this is my favorite superman-esque costume to date. Classic design, nice shield, not too overdone, and pays homage to the comic. 5 stars.

  49. Joe says:

Boring but the outfit and the casting,
