Ratings: Stanley Cup Final’s Game 6 on NBC Rules Monday

NBC easily won Monday’s primetime ratings race behind the sixth and deciding game of hockey’s Stanley Cup Final, while ABC’s “The Bachelorette” held steady and stood as the night’s top-rated series. The Alphabet’s drama “The Whispers,” meanwhile, fell a bit more in its third week.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning to clinch the Cup averaged a 2.6 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall on NBC’s stations from 8 to 11 p.m., with these numbers likely to rise a bit in the nationals. In the metered markets, the game did a 5.6 household rating/9 share — the third best Stanley Cup Final Game 6 rating in the past 20 years, behind only Chicago’s two other recent championship seasons (5.8 in 2010 against the Philadelphia Flyers, and a 5.7 in 2013 against the Boston Bruins).

The game did a 41.0 household rating in Chicago on NBC, the highest ever in the market for a hockey contest; it’s also the highest score for any market for a non-Game 7 NHL game on NBC. The 15.2 local rating in Tampa was the second best among all markets, and also the second highest NHL rating ever in the Florida city.

At ABC, “The Bachelorette” (1.8 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) held steady week to week, ruling as Monday’s top-rated series in most categories and up a tick over the comparable night a year ago. “The Whispers” followed at 10 p.m. with its third episode (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall), down a tenth from last week and dropping sharply from week 1 to week 2 (1.5 to 1.0).

Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) was up 18% (0.2) from last week to match the show’s June 1 premiere score. It may have picked up some teen viewers who usually are watching NBC’s reality hit “American Ninja Warrior,” as the Fox show shot up 80% among the 12-17 crowd (0.9 vs. 0.5).

CBS again went with repeats of Monday regulars “2 Broke Girls” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall), “Mike & Molly” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall), “Scorpion” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall. And CW did the same, airing encores of “The Originals” (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.1 million viewers overall) and “Jane the Virgin” (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 2.6/9; ABC, 1.5/5; Fox, 1.3/4; CBS, 1.0/3; Univision, 0.8/3; Telemundo, 0.6/2; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 7.6 million; ABC, 5.5 million; CBS, 5.4 million; Fox, 4.2 million; Univision, 2.1 million; Telemundo, 1.4 million; CW, 1.2 million.
