FX is developing a limited historical drama series with writer-director Dee Rees and Shondaland based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2010 book “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration.”

The book chronicles the movement of some 6 million African-Americans from the south into the north and western regions of the country from the period of 1915 to 1970. “Warmth of Other Suns” tells much of the story through the eyes of three characters who made the journey in different decades. Wilkerson, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her work at the New York Times, earned a host of critical kudos for the book.

The TV adaptation is in the early stages of development. FX Prods. is shepherding with ABC Signature, the cable arm of ABC Studios, where Shondaland is based. Rees is writing the adaptation and exec producing with Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland’s Besty Beers.

Rees most recently wrote and directed HBO’s Bessie Smith biopic “Bessie,” which bows May 16. She made her feature directing debut in 2011 with the Sundance hit “Pariah.”

When will this drama be ready for viewing???? The book is GREAT and I can’t til this series comes out!!

  2. Tony Lee says:

I just finished reading this book in audio format and am so pleased to hear that it is coming to TV, I was mesmerized from disk one all the way thru disk 19 and cannot wait to see this biopic.

  3. Kelli says:

Dee Rees should have chosen someone other than Shonda Rhimes, whose name is mud with the general public. Having Rhimes involved will immediately lose viewers. Obviously ABC is not so stupid as to want anything else by her.

    • Pamela says:

Correction Kelli… ABC just announced a NEW series by Shonda for the fall.. they love her.. Greys, Scandal, HTGAWM, and now a new one.. she’s successful, and will be so with this FX series as well.

  4. Mae Etta Tubbs says:

That sounds amazing. Of course it would go to a cable channel rather than to ABC. This is what they should have picked up instead of AMERICAN CRIME. A historical drama based on slave life leading up to the civil war would actually be even better but I’ll settle for THE WARTH OF OTHER SUNS. I’ve been waiting for some network to essentially take the movie, SOUNDER, and develop it into a semi-historical
Series. This will probably be as close to it as we get on broadcast television.

    • JWK says:

My family was mentioned in the book “The Warmth Of Other Suns” the incident mentioned in the book actually happened. Let’s hope this production won’t be a fictitious dramatization of actually facts.
