Ratings: High-Income Viewers Flock to ABC’s Comedies, TGIT Dramas

ABC may be lagging its NFL-fueled rivals in overall 18-49 rankings this fall, but the network — led by its Wednesday comedies and TGIT dramas — is the clear leader when it comes to attracting “upscale” viewers for its entertainment series.

In non-sports averages for the season through five weeks, the Alphabet held double-digit leads over CBS, NBC and Fox among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100,000+ and $200,000+ annual income, according to Nielsen. In both categories, NBC ranks second, followed by CBS and Fox. (With football in the mix, NBC moves to the top courtesy of the No. 1 primetime program overall, “Sunday Night Football”).

ABC airs 10 of the top 20 highest-rated broadcast entertainment series in the $100,000+ category, including three of the top five. CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” (with a 7.52 rating) is the narrow leader over ABC’s “Modern Family” (7.47) among all shows, followed by NBC’s “Blindspot” (5.35) and ABC’s “Scandal” (5.29) and “Grey’s Anatomy” (5.09).

Joining “Blacklist” among new series on the list, the highest-rated in $100,000+ are ABC’s “Quantico” (3.83) and “The Muppets” (3.48) and CBS’ “Life in Pieces” (3.47).

And in the premium $200,000+ category, ABC airs four of the top five broadcast entertainment shows. “Modern Family” is No. 1 overall (8.62 rating), followed by “The Big Bang Theory” (6.56), “Black-ish” (5.06), “Grey’s Anatomy” (4.91) and “Scandal” (4.77). “Modern” and “Black-ish” are the only top 20 shows on any network to have a higher rating in $200,000+ than $100,000+.
