ABC Family has given a series commitment to a scripted comedy based on the life of music sensation Nicki Minaj.
The untitled single-camera, half-hour project, which Minaj will exec produce and appear in, will focus on her life growing up in Queens with her vibrant family after immigrating from Trinidad — as well as her personal and musical evolution that led to her eventual rise to stardom.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said the Grammy nominee. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
Kate Angelo (“Sex Tape,” “Will and Grace,” “Bernie Mac”) penned the pilot and will write and executive produce the series. Minaj, Aaron Kaplan (“Life in Pieces,” “Chasing Life,” and “Divorce”), Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher (“Boss”), and Gee Roberson will also serve as executive producers.
Minaj announced via social media that she was on the hunt for her star.
“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said Karey Burke, EVP of programming and development at ABC Family, who announced the news. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
ABC Family was done being for families long ago! I was sitting, watching PLL with my little cousin and she started crying because it was to scary, and some of the scenes were way too sexual. I can’t wait for this show. Hopefully they give it the chance Georgia deserved.
And remember people, this is about her life before super-stardom.
Why do people feel that just because a person has music that clearly is for young adults that they can not venture out and do something different and family friendly. Most of the kids cartoon shows, disney etc is in appropriate for kids but everyone is so blind when it comes to that. Have you actually paid attention to what your kids are watching? A story about ones life is not bad especially when it is meant to be a comedy. Who are any of you to judge? I am sure your children have heard worse coming from the homes they live in. I think that ABC knows what they are doing. Ratings are important but allowing a story to be told and having fun doing it makes it even more interesting. Who determines what is good and what’s not? That is your decision to pull the plug in your home but before you judge research the shows your kids have been exposed to and their subliminal messages that you clearly block out.
I second the comments already made. Minaj does not belong on a so-called Family channel. Have you lost your mind? Her videos/music are laced with vulgarity/crudity and you’re okay with that. No more ABC Family for me.
obviously you haven’t seen some of the tv shows they play on abc family, ie: revenge, pretty little liars, just to name a couple. Instead of having a negative outlook maybe you should just chill. IGNORANCE IS BLISS.
This is great! A comedy show about the life of a rapper. I laugh at that crap all the time!
it is better than hearing about the same old stories about privileged brats who have it easy in life. Judgmental people just have no moral, ignorant fool.
What is wrong with ABC, obviously ratings mean more then morals and dignity at ABC. So long ABC Family, you are no longer welcome in my house.
How can ABC family support a venture like this by someone who’s album must be over age of 18 for purchase. How is that family friendly?
A comedy series from someone who takes offense at everything? What an unusual concept for a show. The woman who loves to be angry is going to make us laugh. I thought her wardrobe covered that.
She is the most family-friendly entertainer there is! Perfect for ABC Family.
Can’t think of a better example for our youth….cough, cough. Oh wait, Miley Cyrus. Lol! another brilliant move by ABC Family…not.
