Amy Schumer Won’t Do ‘Safe Material’ Despite Claims of Racial Insensitivity

Amy Schumer is firing back at critics — specifically, those who claim her material is racially insensitive.

In a Twitter post the comedian put online Sunday morning, Schumer refused to tone down her comedy on race amid recent criticism.

“I am a comic. I am so glad more people are laughing at me and with me all of a sudden,” she wrote. “I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren’t comfortable with. And that’s ok. Stick with me and trust I am joking.”

“I go in and out of playing an irreverent idiot,” she went on. “That includes making dumb jokes involving race. I enjoy playing the girl who time to time says the dumbest thing possible and playing with race is a thing we are not supposed to do, which is what makes it so fun for comics,” she continued. “You can call it a ‘blind spot for racism’ or ‘lazy’ but you are wrong. It is a joke and it is funny. I know that because people laugh at it.”

Her post seems to be a direct response to an article posted by the Guardian this weekend, saying her comedy “has a shockingly large blind spot around race.”

Schumer also recently responded on Twitter to a similarly critical article from the Daily Beast, which said she “is being called subversive and transgressive, the truth is that many of her jokes aren’t as enlightened as they might seem.”

Schumer ended her message by saying that she is not a racist, and her goal is that everyone is treated equally. Read her message in full below.

  2. Gary says:

Here’s how you test which jokes are acceptable: Does anyone laugh? Yes->Acceptable, No->Unacceptable.

  3. Good for Amy… An intelligent, funny comedian with great timing and biting humor.

  4. Or never mind forget her people she’s Just a Dumbass white girl that has no culture and she can’t respect other people culture am i right?

  5. Sup bro!😂all i can say is everybody is equally and all she trying to say is that she’s not racist so please forgive her but the only thing i don’t like about her is she was making fun of people that have cancer

  6. Wm says:

You have the link to the “Guardian” article for both links, including the Daily Beast.

Many of her comments to defend herself/her comedy remind me of those of Andrew Dice Clay.Who, just like her, derived his popularity from his outrageous/out-of-line remarks. I mean if we didn’t buy his explanation given this “comedy” so many years ago (given how far we’ve come today) there is no way we should allow her to get away with it today. Unless, somehow she gets a pass for being a woman/the supposed belief that white women are a “minority”/equal victims of society too. Which many purport as she will likely do that will enable her to continue her “brand” that was Dice’s back in the day.

  9. Arnie says:

Tina Fey made a fortune doing race jokes (some even funny) on “30 Rock” for years ; skipping, bouncing and hopping over the 3rd rail of race.

Or Amy could just go all “Seinfeld” & pre-Katrina “Curb”, and have minorities (blacks) appear all over the sidewalk in street scenes for flavor, e.g. “The Soup Nazi” episode, without out “ever” having one them utter more than a line.

Finally, you could crash and burn like Judd A’s creepy new appendage from “Girls” Lesley (Leslie?), and make yourself into the self-destructive Michael Richards type.

    So, why not Amy?

    • Nana-Dee says:

She doesnt deserve a pass on this. Her jokes are perpetuating stereotypes and she’s not a minority herself. She has white and Jewish privilege. One of the most privileged group of people on the planet.

People are afraid to make fun of her cause of the holocaust and afraid of being called Anti-Semitic. Yet here she is, making fun of every non-white non-Jewish culture, races and people.

Comedians cant hide behind ‘Its just a joke’ anymore. If they cant make people laugh without racism then maybe they need to find another job.

      • Island Planet says:

Your right. There are many many things that people should not be allowed to say or even think. But be careful – once the word police are finished with Amy they’ll be coming for you next. She gets laughs at her own expense first and foremost including her Jewish heritage. Free speech means she can make jokes about anything she wants. Free choice means you don’t have to listen.

And fuck you and your assertion that she’s both a: not a minority and b: Jewish. Plus, why should her membership in either the majority or minority dictate what she’s allowed to make fun of?

  10. LUCY says:

she bores me!!! If she did anything funny, that would be nice!

    • Sal U. Lloyd says:

Something to consider . . . But I thought African Americans would have more (deservedly so) clout than the homosexual community, but I guess not!!!
