Freshman shows topped the Television Critics Association annual awards, with Fox’s “Empire” and Amazon’s “Transparent” leading the pack with four nods each, including the prestigious program of the year.

The nominations were particularly widespread this year across networks, with each of the broadcast networks getting noms: ABC (5), CBS (5), Fox (4), NBC (3, though all in the heritage category), and The CW (4), which was recognized for both “Jane the Virgin” and “The Flash.”

HBO tops the network count with 7 noms (with two for “Game of Thrones”), followed by ABC, CBS, AMC and FX with 5 each. Amazon racked up 4, courtesy of “Transparent,” while Netflix settled for one for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” in the comedy category.

The org’s endorsement of this year’s new shows meant last year’s winners are MIA. Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” which won outstanding new program, failed to gain a single nod, as did drama winner CBS’ “The Good Wife” and FX’s “Louie,” which tied for comedy last year with HBO’s “Veep.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus, though, did earn a nod this year for individual achievement in comedy.

Indeed, six of the 10 acting slots went to stars from first-year shows, notably Gina Rodriguez from “Jane the Virgin,” Taraji P. Henson from “Empire” and Bob Odenkirk from “Better Call Saul,” whose shows also won nods in outstanding new program.

The awards will be handed out Aug. 8 as part of the summer TCA press tour at the Beverly Hilton.

  2. Mercedes McQueen says:

Happy for all that were nomd. My votes to all categories for #Empire & #HTGAWM! Of course for #Transparent as well

  3. OUTLANDER!!!! where is the nomination??

  4. Britlover58 says:

Absolutely nothing for, perhaps, the best thing on television — “Outlander”. These award shows are such a joke.

  5. Goodbyenoway says:

Empire and How to Get Away with Murder are great fun but worthy of awards? C’mon, let’s be serious. They’re just pure trash, popcorn shows. No recognition for Orange, Daredevil, Bosch or Bloodline? These critics must be smokin dope.

    • Annie says:

I don’t think there is a need to call a show trash. Just because a show is pretentious, that doesn’t mean that it is better than a show that is not as serious.
