LONDON — A+E Studios Intl. is to launch “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe,” which stars Kelli Garner, Susan Sarandon, Emily Watson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, at next week’s television market MipTV in Cannes.

The two-parter is based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s New York Times bestseller of the same name. It follows a young Norma Jeane Mortenson as she battles a lonely, loveless existence with an absent mother. Despite the odds, she blossoms into a smart, ambitious woman and reinvents herself as Marilyn Monroe.

As her fame grows, all three of her marriages crumble publicly. Marilyn is unable to control the onset of mental illness inherited from her mother, Gladys (Sarandon) — a woman she loves, hates and tries to save. Although kept secret, Gladys remained a vital and troubling influence.

The show, which has a four-hour running time, is produced by Asylum Entertainment for Lifetime Television.

Other MipTV highlights for A+E Studios Intl., A+E Networks’ distribution arm, include “UnREAL,” “Sons of Liberty” and “Gangland Undercover.”

  1. “It follows a young Norma Jeane Mortenson as she battles a lonely, loveless existence with an absent mother.”

Marilyn was known as Norma Jeane Baker as a child. It’s true that on her birth certificate, she is listed as ‘Norma Jeane Mortenson,” but her mother Gladys had it immediately changed to ‘Norma Jeane Baker’ and that’s the name she was baptized under and the name she went by as a child/teen. Then when she married Jim Douhgerty at age 16, she took his surname.

  2. Marilyn was one of the best entertainers of all times. No one compare to her. So Stop comparing yourselves to her.She touched so many lives and was truly a wonderful person… unique.

  3. Bill B. says:

I wonder what Monroe would think of all this endless interest in her?! She’s been dead and has made a fortune for someone for the past near 53 years. She was only alive for 36 years and only had the lead in about a dozen films & half of those were released during a three year time span. Despite all of her fame while alive, it is really true at this point in time that she has been much more successful dead than alive. A strange and apparently endless phenomenon.
