Idris Elba Set To Present ‘Mandela, My Dad and Me’ at MIPTV (EXCLUSIVE)

PARIS — Idris Elba has joined the roster of stars who are set to attend at MIPTV, the Cannes-set confab which has grown into a popular showcase of premium content for all platforms.

Elba (“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) will attend MIPTV to promote his documentary “Mandela, My Dad and Me” which is produced by his outfit Green Door Pictures, Woodcut Media and Shine North, and repped in international markets by Content Television.

Directed by Daniel Vernon, the one-off doc follows Elba on a journey of “self-exploration” in South Africa during the filming of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” in which he starred as the political hero. The doc then chronicles the actor’s struggle to produce “Idris Elba presents Mi Mandela,” an album of South African music paying tribute to Mandela, while coping with the sudden death of his father, who was also his role model.

“I am delighted to be joining the production and sales teams at MIPTV. This was an incredibly fulfilling project for me – it was difficult at times but ultimately it was a hugely rewarding experience – and I hope broadcasters and international audiences will enjoy my journey in ‘Mandela, My Dad and Me,'” said Elba.

Other talent and execs expected to walk MIPTV’s red carpet and promote new shows include actors Bill Paxton, Ray Liotta, helmer Roland Joffe and exec producer Leslie Greif for ITV Studios’ “Texas Rising,” director Jalil Lespert for Zodiak Rights’ “Versailles,” Catherine Bell and James Denton for ITV Studios’ “The Good Witch,” William Spencer and Caine Sinclair for Marriott Content Studios’ “Two Bellmen,” Rob Schneider for Tricon Films & Television’s “Real Rob,” Mena Suvari for Sonar Entertainment’s “South of Hell” and David Walliams and Jessica Raine for All3media International’s “Partners in Crime.”

Michael Shamberg, a high-profile producer whose film credits include “Django Unchained,” “Pulp Fiction” and “The Big Chill,” will be on hand to deliver the MipDigital Fronts keynote, along with Ze Frank, the president of BuzzFeed Motion Pictures. The keynote will discuss the shifts in production and distribution models that are shaking up the U.S. film and TV industry.

Digital will again play a key part of MIPTV as the showcase will discuss the “Millennial Shift” during the MIP Digital Fronts, as well as during its events dedicated to drama and junior programs.

The MIP Digital Fronts will feature content and talent from 14 top online platforms, including YouTube, Vice, Dailymotion and Makers Studios and newcomers such as AwesomenessTV, DimSum Entertainment and Vox Media.

“Players from around the world are increasing their focus on Millennials eager to engage with them and are actively seeking to adapt to their tastes and viewing habits,” said Laurine Garaude, the topper of Reed MIDEM’s TV division, who noted that “Participation has gone up due to the accelerating opportunities for content from around the world to reach new audiences on multiple platforms.”

In addition, said Garaude, “(Reed MIDEM) is seeing increased participation at (MipTV) from the broader entertainment ecosystem including the digital and advertising communities. Today, creativity in original content is coming from a much wider range of sources.”

MIPTV will turn on the spotlight on Marriott International, which will receive the “Brand of the Year” award at the event. The leading hotel chain recently launched an internal content studio to produce and distribute of entertainment projects, kicking off with “Two Bellmen,” Marriott’s first short film.

Participation from China, France, Spain, Scandinavia and Finland as well as the U.S. is on the rise at MIPTV, per Garaude.

Covering Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway, the Nordics – which boasts one of Europe’s fastest-growing film and TV industries — will be MIPTV’s country of honor. Over 20 Nordic broadcasters, producers, talent, sales companies and digital media outfits are expected to attend MIPTV. The main Nordic event will be hosted on April 14 by Annie, former head of programming at SVT and Thomas Hedberg, Titan TV founder.

In order for MIPTV and MIPCOM to stay relevant to the industry, Reed MIDEM has been banking on exclusive content. “We’ve very keen on showcasing exclusive content which is why we actively identify new projects very early on and follow their development,” pointed out Garaude.

While it explores other potential geographical expansions, Reed MIDEM is planning the second MIPCancun edition for next November 18-20.

The inaugural edition earned a 98% satisfaction rating due to its “system of prescheduled one-to-one meetings based on participants’ preferences,” commented Garaude, who revealed that the “next edition will be expanded to include more buyers and distributors from the growing Latin American market.”
