Aiming to increase the international exposure of its local standup comics, Viacom’s South European and African Comedy Central channels will hold their first-ever joint Comedy Central International Showcase during the upcoming Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, featuring four talents who are pulling ratings in key territories across South Europe and Africa.

South Africa will send two comedians to Just for Laughs: the “strangely sexy fat guy” Jason Goliath, and locally popular puppet master Conrad Koch with his infamous puppet, Chester Missing. Koch won the South African Entertainer of the Year award in 2010 and frequently guest-stars at South Africa’s biggest shows.

Italian comedian Francesco de Carlo, who joined Comedy Central in 2014, and Spain’s prominent funnyman Alex O’Dogherty, who performs on stage, TV, radio and has appeared in 32 films, will also be performing at the live show in Montreal’s Yuk Yuk’s comedy club on July 25, which will be aired in Italy, Spain and Africa this autumn.

Comedy Central is increasingly riding the global humor wave as evidenced by the rise of South African comic Trevor Noah, who starred as a Roast-host on Comedy Central in South Africa and is now poised to take over from Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” in the U.S.

“Developing the stand-up industry is definitely a part of our DNA at Comedy Central and in the past few years we have been doing that successfully in Spain, Italy and Africa,” said Amalia Martinez De Velasco, VP of Comedy Brands for Viacom International Media Networks, in a statement.

“This event is a great chance for our comics to get new exposure while at the same time demonstrating to other up-and-coming talents in our regions that Comedy Central supports local comics and can create opportunities for them,” she added.
