He replaces Roy Tang and takes up the post from Friday.
Leung was head of news at the channel when it wrongly announced the death of former Chinese president Jiang Zemin. Leung said that the report had gone out despite his “all-out efforts.” The erroneous broadcast prompted a probe into interference by the station’s owner and earned ATV a fine.
Civic Party lawmaker Claudia Mo, said Leung’s appointment was a “pleasant surprise” as Leung has media experience and is not simply a government appointed administrator.
Other previous experience includes managing editor from 1982 to 1990 at broadcast leader Television Broadcasts and three years as head of mandarin-language news at KTSF in California. He also started ETVision, an Internet TV finance news channel, and headed ET Press, a book publisher, under the Hong Kong Economic Times Group.
