Broadway’s ‘Something Rotten!’ Leads 2015 Outer Critics Circle Nominations (FULL LIST)

It’s off to the races: The theater industry’s 2015 awards season kicked off with the nominations announcement for the Outer Critics Circle Awards, which bestowed an even dozen nods on Broadway musical comedy “Something Rotten!”

The Roundabout Theater Company’s well-received revival of “On the Twentieth Century” landed nine noms, with eight for dance-centric musical “An American in Paris” and seven for British historical marathon “Wolf Hall.”

Opening on Wednesday, “Something Rotten!” heads into the Outer Critics’ top musical race alongside “An American in Paris,” “The Visit,” “The Last Ship” and “It Shoulda Been You.” Broadway plays vying for the trophy all hail from the U.K., with “Wolf Hall” in the category with “The Audience” and “The Curious Incident of the Dog” in the Night-Time.”

While the OCC, a group of journalists and critics who cover the city’s theater scene for media outlets based outside of New York, is first out of the gate, it doesn’t usually serve as an accurate bellwether for the Tony nominations. That’s in part because in many years, a handful of major Broadway contenders — this year including “Fun Home” and “Hand to God” — are left out since they had been nominated for Off Broadway runs in previous seasons.

Hollywood names on this year’s list of nominees include Bradley Cooper, Helen Mirren, Elisabeth Moss and Kristin Chenoweth.

Winners of the 2015 Outer Critics Circle Awards will be announced May 11, with an awards presentation set for May 21.
