Magnolia Pictures and Participant Media have acquired all U.S. rights to “Thru You Princess,” two months after its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Thru You Princess,” directed by Ido Haar, follows New Orleans resident Samantha Montgomery who works as a caregiver for the elderly during the day and transforms into aspiring singer Princess Shaw at night. Her homemade clips on YouTube are mashed up by Israeli remix artist Kutiman to create new musical pieces.

Magnolia expects to release the film next year. Variety‘s Chief International Film Critic Peter Debruge described the movie as “astounding and thoroughly inspirational” in his review.

“Ido Haar’s relevant and inspirational film is a real-life Cinderella story, and Princess Shaw is a phenomenal discovery,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Participant is the perfect partner to help share this film with U.S. audiences.”

The film was produced by Liran Atzmor with Stephen Apkon of Reconsider co-producing. Exec producers are Esther van Messel and Gitte Hansen for First Hand Films.

The film was produced for YesDocu, with the support of the New Israeli Fund for Cinema, the Israel Lottery Council for Culture and Arts, Sundance Fund, Cinereach, and the Israeli Film Council of the Ministry Culture and Sport.
