Jason Markey has been appointed executive VP and head of music at STX Entertainment, the company announced Tuesday.
Markey will supervise the company’s music endeavors, including film score production, soundtrack development and efforts to develop original music for 12 to 15 major motion pictures per year.
“Jason is truly one of the best and brightest at helping filmmakers marry the right music to the right movie or scene,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STX Entertainment motion picture group. “Our studio is lucky to have someone with his understanding of the business and deep appreciation and love for so many genres and artists.”
The longtime music exec joins STX from Relativity Media, where he spent six years as exec VP of music and soundtracks. He oversaw music for films such as “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Bridesmaids,” “The Best of Me,” “Safe Haven,” “Like Crazy,” “Limitless,” “The Fighter” and “Dear John.” During Markey’s time at Relativity, the studio picked up an Oscar nom for “Grateful” from “Beyond the Lights,” in addition to Grammy and Golden Globe noms in 2013 and 2012, respectively.
Prior to working at Relativity, Markey spent a decade as general manager of Immortal records. His resume also includes a stint at Arista Records, where he worked with musicians including Sarah McLachlan, Patti Smith and Carlos Santana. Markey began his career at MCA Records in 1990.
