Steven Spielberg looks to have found his next movie, having attached himself to direct the bigscreen adaptation of “Ready Player One” for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

Ernest Cline penned the popular sci-fi novel, an adaptation of which the studio has been trying to get off the ground for some time with everyone from Robert Zemeckis to Christopher Nolan showing interest at one time or another.

Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will also produce.

Zak Penn wrote the script.

The novel, published in 2011, is set in a not-too-distant future where advanced Internet, gaming and virtual reality technologies have changed the world as we know it and led to the creation of the Oasis, a virtual reality universe that people live in and value more than the real world.

Jesse Ehrman and Racheline Benveniste will oversee for the studio.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to Warner Bros. We had an historic series of collaborations in the ’80s and ’90s and have wanted to bring him back for years,” said Greg Silverman, president, creative development and worldwide production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “As for ‘Ready Player One,’ we have always felt that Steven was the dream director for this project.”

The CAA-repped Spielberg recently finished production on the Tom Hanks drama “Bridge of Spies,” which bows in October. He will next start shoot the feature adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The BFG.”

Deadline Hollwyood first reported the news.

More ‘on board’ predictive programming.from the Spielberg franchise slum.

I see so many typos every day in online articles. Seriously, why can’t you just hire or even ASK someone to proof read your work? I’ll now go around telling people to actively avoid Variety because they can’t do what they’re being employed to do (wow, watch this comment NOT get published)…

  3. Cool story for sure. But when I read the last sentence about another project I was like “what??? Tom Hanks is in another movie??” lol!

I’ve recently read the book. This should prove interesting.

(sigh) I hope Spielberg finds his magic with this one as opposed to his mailing-it-in performance in the “War of the Worlds” remake.

I’ll believe it once the cameras are rolling! If does go ahead this is one to watch out for!

  8. John Anderton says:

Spielberg usually shoots two films back to back and then takes years in-between attaching to and dropping out of many properties. So if the next wave of two films is “Bridge of Spies” and “The BFG” then that means “Ready Player One” could be in dev for years, only to be dropped by Spielberg and delayed for years, just like “Robopocalypse,” “Interstellar,” and many others? That really sucks for the author and the fans.

Best to find a filmmaker who really wants to make this film a priority. Let’s hope Spielberg delivers.

  9. About time! Been waiting for this to become a feature film ever since closing the book!
