Watch: New Trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boxing Drama ‘Southpaw’

The Weinstein Co. has released a new trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Southpaw,” mixing boxing action and family pathos.

The trailer highlights a muscled-up Gyllenhaal, who added 15 pounds for the role, against the backdrop of a family drama. Gyllenhaal plays a boxer whose life is sent into a downward spiral after his wife’s tragic death. His luck turns after he receives help from a washed-up former boxer (Forest Whitaker).

“Southpaw” is directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter and “The Equalizer” writer Richard Wenk. The project had been in development at DreamWorks with Eminem in the starring role before winding up at TWC. Eminem has contributed to the soundtrack.

Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz also star in the movie, which hits theaters on July 24.

  1. The Truth says:

How many times do we have to see this same story, are there no good writers in Hollywood? This just looks bad and cliche.mWho wrote this crap and worse who green lighted it?

  2. Bill B. says:

He’s becoming a special actor. His performance in Nightcrawler was revelatory. I don’t much care for boxing movies, but this I gotta see.

  3. George Clowney says:

Was forced to sit through this in the theater, after a bizarre and awkward introduction for the trailer by Gyllenhaal. I think I’ll pass.

There you are again using variations of Clooney ‘ s name to “comment” on every social media of Gyllenhaal’ s press. To “pass” on requires actually unfollowing his news.
