Lionsgate has set an Aug. 7 release in the U.S. for the stop-motion “Shaun the Sheep Movie” from StudioCanal and Aardman Animations.

The film, a spinoff of the long-running TV series, has already grossed $54 million in its international release. “Shaun the Sheep” airs in over 170 territories, the title character was first seen in Aardman’s short “A Close Shave” with the Wallace and Gromit characters.

Producers are Julie Lockhart and Paul Kewley from Aardman Animations. Mark Burton and Richard Starzak directed from their own script in which Shaun gets more than he bargained for when he decides to take the day off and have some fun.

Guy Lodge gave the film a strong review for Variety at the Sundance Kids Festival in London, calling it “cleverly off-kilter.”
