With “Black Mass” already generating buzz, Warner Bros. looks to have found the next directing gig for Scott Cooper.
Cooper is in talks to direct “American Wolf” for WB with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way producing the project, sources tell Variety.
Based on source material from Nate Blakeslee, a senior editor at Texas Monthly, the story follows a hunter in Yellowstone National Park who accidentally kills an endangered American wolf, and the unlikely friendship that forms between him and the wildlife researcher who works with wolves in the park.
Kevin McCormick will join DiCaprio as a producer and produce through his Langley Park. Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran will also serve as a producer.
Warner Bros. exec Jon Gonda will oversee the project for the studio with Nathaniel Posey overseeing on behalf of Appian Way.
Appian Way and Cooper’s relationship goes back to “Out of the Furnace,” which Cooper directed and Appian produced.
Cooper’s “Black Mass” stars Johnny Depp as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger and will bow at the Venice Film Festival. Cooper is repped by CAA.
