Scientology Documentary ‘Going Clear’ Gets October DVD, VOD Release

Going Clear Scientology and the Prison

FilmRise has acquired U.S. DVD and non-exclusive VOD rights from Content Media to Alex Gibney’s Scientology documentary “Going Clear,” Variety has learned exclusively.

FilmRise will release “Going Clear” on DVD and Blu-ray on October 6, and on VOD platforms, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Google Play, Sony PlayStation and Xbox, non-exclusively on October 30.

“Going Clear” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and debuted on HBO on March 29. It’s been nominated for seven 2015 Emmy Awards. “Though the lid was blown off the Church of Scientology long ago, Alex Gibney’s powder-keg documentary, ‘Going Clear,’ should certainly rattle the walls, if not shake them to their very foundations,” Variety critic Scott Foundas wrote in his review.

The Church of Scientology has reacted negatively to the film, blasting film critics who gave the movie positive reviews and asserting that the film’s assertions are inaccurate.

I can’t wait to see it!

Of course they attacked Alex Gibney and Going Clear! It’s what they’re trained to do! Always attack, never defend. And they looked like idiots doing it. And that’s probably an insult to all idiots everywhere. Look, this is a totalitarian cult that practices brainwashing. I mean, what kind of church has their own Slave Labor/Reeducation camps where members can spend years and years in?

But now they are a universal joke. Wouldn’t want to be them…

The “church’s” response is hilarious. They don’t refute anything in the film, and of course if there were lies in Going Clear they would have already sued it up one side and down the other. All they do is attack Lawrence Wright, Alex Gibney, and the ex-Scientologists who appear in the film, with lies, distortions, and misrepresentations. The participants are not all angels, and a couple did vile things when they were in Scientology, ON BEHALF OF Scientology. Any truths would have come from culling auditing notes, which are supposed to be as secret and sacred as a confessional, but are not. The documentary has already been seen by millions of people, and soon the floodgates will open more.

If you want the full experience and both sides of the story, check out the church’s response as well
