Relativity, Condé Nast Entertainment Partner on

Relativity Studios is partnering with Condé Nast Entertainment and Vogue to produce and distribute a documentary about the making of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2015 Costume Institute exhibition and gala.

The companies have tapped Andrew Rossi, the filmmaker behind “Page One: Inside the New York Times” and “Ivory Tower,” to direct the look at how the annual showcase of haute couture is created.

It’s the latest example of a news company teaming up with a movie studio on a joint venture. In recent months, the likes of Newsweek, “60 Minutes” and BuzzFeed have all collaborated with studios or production companies on projects that mine their areas of coverage for bigscreen entertainments.

In this case there’s some natural overlap. The gala tends to bring out a crowd of A-list Hollywood players, eager to show off their high fashion bona fides on the red carpet.

The documentary will chronicle the creation of the Costume Institute exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” as well as the gala benefit. The exhibit explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western high fashion and will be at the Met from May 7 through August 16, 2015. “In the Mood for Love” director Wong Kar Wai serves as the exhibition’s artistic director.

The evening’s theme tends to be reflected in the guests’ outfits. Previous Met Gala themes have included Punk: Chaos to Couture, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, and AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion.

“This will be an extraordinary opportunity for a global audience to see what goes on before and after guests walk the red carpet, including the months of preperation for the exhibition and storied gala, culminating in the big opening night,” Tucker Tooley, Relativity president, said in a statement.

Fabiola Beracasa-Beckman, who served as a producer for Relativity Studios’ “Desert Dancer,” will produce the film. Her recently formed Planted Projects production company has a first-look deal with Relativity Studios.

Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanagh and Matthew Weaver (“Rock of Ages”) will also serve as producers, along with Dawn Ostroff from Condé Nast Entertainment. The film will be executive produced by Skot Bright and Tucker Tooley.

    Sorry, but this writer is pessimistic about what the end product will look like. Why? Its the involvement of Conde Nast. In the last year they’ve destroyed some of their best titles. For example, Traveler. They added Wintour to the masthead and got rid of all content that was relevant. Sure, you can find out what makeup to wear, but problems with hotels? Nope. You gotta wonder who in the world is really running the company.
