Berlin Winner ‘Pearl Button’ Bought for U.S. by Kino Lorber

Kino Lorber has acquired all U.S. rights to Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman’s “The Pearl Button,” which won the Silver Bear award for best script at the Berlin Film Festival last month.

The Pearl Button,” a documentary exploring Chile’s coastline and past, is a follow-up to Guzman’s “Nostalgia for the Light.” Kino Lorber plans a theatrical rollout in more than 50 markets, along with educational distribution, to be followed by digital release on all major platforms.

The film explores Chile’s 2,670 miles of coastline, the Patagonian indigenous people, the first English sailors and brutalized political prisoners. The pic’s title comes from a short history lesson about Jemmy Button, a teenager sold to a British naval captain in 1830 for a mother-of-pearl button.

The deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Pyramide International’s Lucero Garzon.
