“The Last Man on Earth” star Kristen Schaal has joined Melissa McCarthy, Kathy Bates and Peter Dinklage in the Universal comedy “Michelle Darnell.”

The script, based on an original character created by McCarthy, will be penned by Ben Falcone, McCarthy and Steve Mallory. Falcone is directing.

The story follows a titan of industry sent to prison for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.

Schaal will portray a Scout leader.

Falcone and McCarthy are also producing through their On the Day Productions, along with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay through their Gary Sanchez Productions. Senior VP of production Erik Baiers and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for Universal.

Gary Sanchez’s Chris Henchy will also produce, and Kevin Messick will serve as executive producer. The film has been slated for an April 8, 2016, release.

Schaal starred in Robert Redford’s “A Walk in the Woods,” which premiered at Sundance. She also stars in Fox’s animated series “Bob’s Burgers” and appears on “The Daily Show.”

Schaal is repped by UTA and lawyer Jeff Endlich.

Why don’t they have the show “Last Man on Earth” on every week. I don’t want it to end. I love this show! Kirsten is such a great actress/ comedian as are all the characters on that show. The show’s a breath of fresh air, in that it’s just so funny. With all the negative media news today (Isis, etc) we need to watch a show like this, every week, to take us away from reality.
