Michael Douglas Remembers His Late Mother’s ‘Wicked Sense of Humor’

Michael Douglas spoke candidly for the first time about his late mother, actress Diana Douglas Webster, who died July 3 from cancer at the age of 92 in Woodland Hills, Calif.

Rather than teaching him how to hone his acting skills, “She taught me more about giving it your best shot and maintaining decorum,” Douglas, 70, told Variety Monday evening at the Cinema Society screening of his latest film, “Ant-Man,” in New York. “She was English-Bermudian, so they kind of have a stiff upper lip to carry on.”

Douglas said he’s “still digesting” her passing but will always remember his mother’s elegant grace and her jokes. “She was a class act. A real lady,” he said. “She had a wicked sense of humor, very bright. Just all around, she was a wonderful lady.”

Webster was a veteran stage and screen actress. She appeared in more than 20 films including “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and “It Runs in the Family.” She also had a role on NBC’ “The West Wing.”

She was married to Kirk Douglas from 1941-53. Following their divorce, she married actor Bill Darrid in 1956 and then Donald A. Webster after her second husband’s death. Douglas’s father, Kirk, is set to celebrate his 99th birthday in December.
