Universal Pictures has hired veteran DreamWorks production executive Mark Sourian as exec VP of production.

Sourian has worked at DreamWorks since 1997. He most recently served as an independent producer with a first-look deal, under which he produced “Need for Speed” and “Delivery Man.”

Sourian will report to co-presidents of production Peter Cramer and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum and will begin his new role at Universal later this month.

He started with DreamWorks as a development assistant and worked his way up to co-president in 2009. During his tenure, he shepherded “The Ring,” “The Ring 2,” “House of Sand and Fog,” “Red Eye” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

He is also an executive producer on the upcoming DreamWorks project “A Dog’s Purpose,” which will be helmed by Lasse Halstrom.
