‘Deadpool’ First Look: See Ryan Reynolds’ Merc Romancing Morena Baccarin

While there’s still no sign of the “Deadpool” trailer that took Comic-Con by storm earlier this month, 20th Century Fox has thrown fans a bone by releasing three new photos from Ryan Reynolds’ hotly anticipated superhero film, courtesy of the U.K.’s Empire magazine.

We’ve seen Marvel’s infamous “Merc with a Mouth” in costume already, thanks to previously released promotional stills, but one of the new images offers our first glimpse of Reynolds’ Wade Wilson out of his signature red and black armor with his paramour Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), aka Copycat, a shape-shifting mutant who was associated with the X-Men offshoot group X-Force in the comics.

The second photo shows Deadpool alongside Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a telepathic mutant with precognitive abilities.

This will be Reynolds’ second time behind Deadpool’s mask; the character was last seen onscreen in 2009’s poorly received X-Men spinoff, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which saw the hero relegated to a mindless villain with his wisecracking mouth sealed shut — a choice that was met with derision by comicbook fans. This iteration discards the events of “Origins” and reboots the character.

“I think it’s an absolute miracle that a studio let us make ‘Deadpool,’ let alone a rated-R ‘Deadpool,’” Reynolds said of Fox’s big swing at Comic-Con, calling the new film “the most faithful adaptation of a comic book to a movie I’ve ever seen.”

According to “X-Men: Days of Future Past” writer and producer Simon Kinberg, Deadpool also factors into Fox’s plans for the wider X-Men cinematic universe, with the writer telling ComicBook.com: “There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.” Reynolds also joined the casts of Fox’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Fantastic Four” on stage at Comic-Con for a superhero selfie.

Gina Carano, Ed Skrein and T. J. Miller also star in “Deadpool,” which is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 12, 2016.
