Box Office: ‘Cinderella’ Opens with $2.3 Million at Latenight Shows

Disney’s live-action “Cinderella” is looking like it will be the belle of the box office, launching with an impressive $2.3 million at Thursday night preview showings in the U.S.

That’s significantly above the $2 million Thursday night result for the studio’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” from 2013 and last year’s “Big Hero 6” with $1.4 million. It’s also well ahead of the $1.6 million preview total for Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” when it opened in 2012.

Cinderella,” starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother and Lily James as the heroine, looks likely to open at around $60 million at 3,845 locations.

It’s the latest in Disney’s live-action fantasy movies, stretching back to “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. “Oz the Great and Powerful” took in nearly $500 million worldwide, and last year’s “Maleficent” cleared $758 million.

“Cinderella” is also launching with a seven-minute “Frozen Fever” short that’s running ahead of the movie.

Warner Bros.’ “Run All Night,” reteaming Liam Neeson with director Jaume Collet-Serra, is also opening this weekend at 3,171 sites in the U.S. The actioner earned $455,000 Thursday night and is expected to take in around $15 million for the weekend. Neeson and Collet-Serra previously collaborated on 2011’s “Unknown” and “Non-Stop,” which opened last year with $28.9 million domestically and finished with $92.2 million.
