“Mad Max: Fury Road” has started with a bang in France and Australia with a combined $3 million on its opening day Thursday.
Warner Bros. reported the Tom Hardy-Charlize Theron tentpole grossed $2.25 million from 802 screens in France showings starting a 2 p.m. with 53% of the top five titles. The studio said the 76,000 admissions in Paris represent the highest opening day for the greater Paris area so far this year.
In Australia — home to director George Miller and the setting for the action-packed title — “Fury Road” grossed about $810,000. That was 65% higher than “Pitch Perfect 2,” now in its second week.
New Zealand grossed about $130,000 from 70 locations.
In addition to the U.S. debut on Friday, “Mad Max: Fury Road” will debut in 68 foreign markets this weekend at more than 16,000 screens. It touches down in most major territories, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico and Russia.
