Producers have launched a $650,000 Kickstarter campaign for a documentary on science educator Bill Nye, best known as “The Science Guy.”

David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, who teamed on the documentary “The Immortalists,” will direct, with Seth Gordon and Nick Pampenella producing. Gordon won the Academy Award for best documentary for “Undefeated.”

Nye is the CEO of the Planetary Society, where he’s leading a mission to launch a solar-powered satellite into the cosmos and advocating for the importance of science, technology and discovery.

Donation incentives include a sneak peek of the film, in which Nye witnesses the launch of his solar sail into space, his handwritten notes from the evolution vs. creationism debate, one of his bow ties and an associate producer credit for $10,000.

Nye appeared in the live-action educational segments of “Back to the Future: The Animated Series” in which he would demonstrate science while Christopher Lloyd explained. He hosted 100 episodes of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” from 1993 to 1998 for Disney/PBS. The show targeted children, but attracted a wide adult audience as well.

Gordon’s documentary credits include “Freakonomics,” “The King of Kong” and “Finders Keepers.” His fiction work as director includes “Horrible Bosses,” “Identity Thief” and “Four Christmases.”

Pampenella wrote and produced Bill Nye’s live show “Bill Nye the Science Guy: Live” and curated “Off the Record,” a spoken word tour featuring Kevin and Joe Jonas.
