The film was written and directed by “Big Stone Gap” author Adriana Trigiani. Patrick Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, John Benjamin Hickey, Jane Krakowski, Anthony LaPaglia and Jenna Elfman also star.
“Big Stone Gap” was shot entirely on location in the coal-mining Virginia town of the same name, which is also Trigiani and Wilson’s hometown.
“We made not just a great movie, but a beautiful movie,” Goldberg said. “It looks lush.”
Shooting began in October 2013; Donna Gigliotti (“Shakespeare in Love”) produced with James Spies (“The Contender”). J.E. Craig and Jean Morrisey exec produced.
The first “Big Stone Gap” novel was published in 2001 followed by sequels “Big Cherry Holler,” “Milk Glass Moon” and “Home to Big Stone Gap.” The story centers on middle-aged spinster Ave Maria Mulligan finding love and a sense of self amid the eccentrics in a small Virginia coal town.
Rounding out the cast are Chris Sarandon, Jasmine Guy, Judith Ivey, James Hampton, Paul Wilson, Mary Pat Gleason, Dagmara Dominczyk and Mary Testa.
Berney has been an executive at IFC, Newmarket and FilmDistrict in addition to heading Picturehouse, which he relaunched in 2013. He’s oversseen releases of “The Passion of the Christ,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
