Berlin: Frances McDormand, Brit Marling, Christian Slater Join ‘The Wife’

LONDON — Frances McDormand, Logan Lerman, Brit Marling, Christian Slater and Jonathan Pryce have joined the cast of “The Wife,” which stars Glenn Close. Embankment will commence international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Pic is produced by Anonymous Content and Meta Film. CAA and WME Global are co-representing the U.S sale.

Close stars as the cool, elegant Joan Castleman, a flawlessly gracious wife who gladly gave up her writing ambitions to play the role of helpmate to her husband, the philandering literary giant Joe Castleman (Pryce). On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature Joan decides to leave him.

Slater is the determined, unauthorized biographer who unwittingly becomes the catalyst that prompts Joan’s decision. A startling secret at the heart of Joan and Joe’s relationship is laid bare in a “poignant, funny and emotional journey about the conflicts of love and ambition.”

Marling will play the younger Joan, a Smithie girl and a product of her class and time, and McDormand her world-weary mentor. Lerman plays David, Joe and Joan’s troubled son, an aspiring writer who feels he can never live up to his father’s success.

Swedish director Bjorn Runge (“De Blaue Engel,” “Daybreak”), winner of Berlin’s Silver Bear and two Swedish Academy Awards, will direct “The Wife,” from a screenplay by Jane Anderson (“Olive Kitteridge,” “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio”), adapted from Meg Wolitzer’s 2003 novel of the same name.

Rosalie Swedlin (“Laggies,” “Cracks,” “Red Corner”) of Anonymous Content, Meta Louise Foldager (“A Royal Affair,” “Melancholia,” “Antichrist”) of Meta Film Stockholm, and Swedish producers Maria Dahlin and Gila Ulfung are producing “The Wife,” which shoots in fall 2015, in Stockholm and New York.

Steve Golin of Anonymous Content is executive producer.
