Oscars: 124 Documentaries Submitted for Consideration

A total of 124 features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 88th Academy Awards.

High-profile titles include Amy Winehouse doc “Amy,” “He Named Me Malala,” “The Wolfpack,” “Cartel Land,” Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next,” “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Batkid Begins,” “Meru,” “The Hunting Ground,” “The Look of Silence” and “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine.”

A24 saw a sold box office performance for “Amy,” which was released in July and has grossed $8.3 million — making it one of the top 25 grossing docs of all time in the U.S. “Where to Invade Next” was sold to a new distribution outfit operated by Tom Quinn, Jason Janego and Tim League, who plan a qualifying run on Dec. 23 in New York and Los Angeles.

Mountain-climbing doc “Meru” has grossed $2.3 million since its release in August by Music Box. Fox Searchlight has taken in $1.7 million since Oct. 2 for “He Named Me Malala,” Davis Guggenheim’s portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

The Wolfpack” has grossed $1.3 million for Magnolia since its release in June and The Orchard took in $1 million for “Dior and I.”

Laura Poitras won the documentary award this year for “Citizenfour,” while Alex Gibney has two titles on the list — “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine” and “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison System of Belief,” which won an Emmy last month.
