Covering some 11,000 sq ft, new facilities will double Paris-based TeamTO’s studio capacity; by the end of the year, it will accommodate 60% of the company’s entire 380-person staff.
New studio will be located at La Cartoucherie, a complex that already houses France’s Folimage animation studios, producer of the Oscar-nominated “A Cat in Paris,” prestigious animation school La Poudriere, where co-founder TeamTO Corinne Kouper taught, and offices from other filmmaking and animation sectors such as Les Films du Nord, an animated short film house and toon lobby L’Equipee.
With the new TeamTO studio, La Cartoucherie will consolidate all the more as a key animation hub in France.
TeamTO celebrates this year its 10th anniversary as a toon production house, having been founded in 2005 by Guillaume Hellouin, Corinne Kouper and Caroline Souris.
In the beginnings, launching a first dedicated animation studio in La Cartoucherie in 2008, the Gallic shingle began with an animation team of 23. This has now grown to 150 today, and it will reach 220 by year-end, per Hellouin.
“Our original production team in Valence was originally made up of traditional animators. Now however, because of the range of talent we have been able to source locally, the studio has been able to expand into other areas of technical expertise,” TeamTO co-founder and executive producer Kouper told Variety.
One example: the rendering and compositing of “Angelo Season 3,” which was completed in Valence. “It is very exciting because it speaks to the studio’s vitality and ability to attract talent,” she added.
TeamTO runs a 20-people R&D team, which regularly collaborates with Grenoble’s Inria Technology center, the French national institute for computer science and applied mathematics. Its productions have been aired on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney Chanel, as well as Netflix, France’s TF1 and Germany’s Super RTL.
Company’s titles take in its Emmy-nominated IP “Angelo Rules” and “Oscar’s Oasis,” which it produced, as as well as third-party titles on which it has provided animation services such as “Sofia the First” (Disney), “PJ Masks” (eOne), “Raving Rabbids” (Ubisoft) and “Calimero” (Gaumont).
TeamTO also produced Christian De Vita’s “Yellowbird,” distributed in 35 countries. Wrekin Hill Entertainment acquired all North American rights to the toon feature. It has offices in L.A. Headed by Leonora Hume, the U.S. office handles relations with U.S. studios and talent and the search for financing links and other opportunities.
France’s Rhone-Alpes region, also takes in Annecy, home to the world’s biggest animation festival and a branch of vidgames giant Ubisoft.
