13-Year-Old ‘Jurassic World’ Actor Ty Simpkins on His Unusually Early Career Start

Young Actor Ty Simpkins on Roles
Terence Patrick for Variety

At only 13 years old, Ty Simpkins has assembled an impressive resume, appearing in films including “Insidious,” “Revolutionary Road” and “Iron Man 3.” Hollywood’s honorary moppet currently appears with Chris Pratt in “Jurassic World,” released June 12.

How did you get started acting?

These people from a soap opera (“One Life to Live”) called my (pregnant) mom and said, “We hear that you’re having a son. Could we have him for this role?” And my mom said “He’s not born yet.” And they were like, “That’s fine. We’ll wait.” My sister and brother did this kind of stuff, so why not add an extra one? So when I was three weeks old, I did my first soap opera, where I was born in jail.

You were really little when you were in “Insidious.” Were you allowed to watch it?

Yes I was, but I didn’t, because I was scared. I sobbed while filming the first one. I didn’t want to relive that.

What was it like to work on “Jurassic World”?

It was so much fun. Hawaii was fun surfing big waves and hiking. And then with New Orleans, it was all about culture and music and food, and it was great. I ate a gator dog there, and that was pretty good.

Wait… what did that taste like?

I will say this… It didn’t taste like chicken. It actually kind of tasted like steak.

Are you one to give advice?

I do have advice for any kid actors. Just go in there and own it like you own the job already. You just have to say, “I’m going to get this, I’m going to get this.” Be optimistic about everything, and then believe what’s on the page.

Hey Ty, I’m Darci and I’m 13. Everyone probably tells you that they are your biggest fan and with everyone that tells you that, I’m probably not your biggest, but I will tell you that I am one of them. You probably got all your popularity from Jurassic World, but I recognize you from other movies like Ironman 3, Insidious, hangman, ect. Anyways, I have always wanted to write to you, but I don’t know your fan mail address. You probably won’t get this anyways, but I hope if you read it you will at least find time to respond. If you don’t that’s okay, but if you could follow me on instagram that would be amazing!! I also have twitter you are amazing and hopefully I will see you in more movies to come! All of your fans support you so own it and good luck!!
    Sincerely,
    Darci Shock <3

  5. Shelby Hill says:

Hey Ty, I’m Shelby and I’m 13. I remember seeing you do an interview with Nick on the Today Show and you said something about your grandfather. You showed his dog tags and I was astonished. My grandpa died almost three months ago now and he, too fought in the Vietnam war. So did my Papa on my mom’s side. I wear his army tags, and my great grandpa’s navy tags from WW2, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before Grandpa died he told me something during a game of chess we played while he had me in a fork. There was only one way out, and I couldn’t seem to find it. Grandpa was a captain in the army and received his intelligence award, then went to school for literature. So he told me one of his poems. “Webs, within traps, within webs.” I realized that just one move could change the entire outlook on the game. Remember this when in doubt, Ty. Stay strong because we all wanted to dive in and save Dalton, we all wanted to join genius Harley and help Iron Man, and we all couldn’t do anything but love Gray Mitchell from Jurassic World. All of your fans are here to support you and I would love to know if you have been doing better? Sincerely, Shelby.
