Box Office: ‘Pan’ Falls Short as ‘The Martian’ Orbits $37 Million Weekend

Pixie dust is no match for NASA’s space travel technology when it comes to box office success, apparently: Hugh Jackman starrer “Pan” is turning in disappointing opening weekend numbers while Matt Damon’s “The Martian” continues to soar in its second weekend.

Warner Bros.’ “Pan,” which also stars Rooney Mara and Garrett Hedlund in director Joe Wright’s take on J. M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan,” tallied $5.2 million in Friday receipts, which indicates a three-day total around $17 million, according to studio estimates. The fantasy pic is playing in 3,515 locations and carries a budget of $150 million; earlier estimates had pegged an opening weekend total in the low $20 million range, signaling a tough financial return for the studio.

The Martian,” on the other hand, is exceeding its second-weekend estimates, tracking for a three-day haul of up to $37 million. The Fox release, screening in 3,854 locations, pulled in $11 million on Friday, giving it a strong lead for the second weekend in a row.

The sci-fi hit has come under fire in the last week, however, drawing criticism for its treatment of its Asian-American characters.

In second place for the weekend is animated family pic “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which features the likes of Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez lending their voices to Halloween-favorite characters. Playing in 3,768 locations in its third week, the Sony release generated $5 million on Friday, tracking for a weekend haul around $25 million.

“The Walk,” another Sony release, has yet to find a foothold with audiences; the high-wire drama, which expanded to 2,509 screens this weekend, nabbed $1.1 million on Friday, which forecasts a weekend total around $3.7 million. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as tight-rope artists Philippe Petit in the Robert Zemeckis-helmed spectacle.

Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle’s “Steve Jobs,” starring Michael Fassbender as the tech icon, opened in four locations to $175,000 on Friday, with an expected three-day total of $530,000. The Universal drama’s estimated per-screen average indicates that it will be the biggest limited launch of 2015.
