Turkey has selected coming of age drama “Sivas” directed by Kaan Mujdeci as its contender for the foreign language Oscar race.
The film was a surprise selection for Venice festival competition last year, due to its subject matter, which includes dog fighting, and it being the director’s first feature. Despite that, the picture went on to earn the special jury prize.
The story follows an 11 year old boy who befriends a fighting dog.
The selection was made by the Artistic Events Commission (SEK), which comprises representatives from the Culture and Tourism Ministry and cinema industry organizations.
The SEK’s head Mehmet Guleryuz said that this year the committee had screned a record 19 submissions.
