Oscar Foreign-Language Contenders Jostle for Academy’s Attention

While the number of countries sending films for the foreign-language race has dropped to 81 from last year’s record of 83, there are still plenty of goodies to choose from. Most films are from returning nations, only Peru is a newcomer, and there are a few returning helmers, too. But there are also 27 debut directors with a goodly number of women in the group.
