Kristen Stewart became the first American actress to win a Cesar at France’s most prominent film awards show Friday. Stewart won best supporting actress for her co-starring role in “Cloud of Sils Maria,” directed by Olivier Assayas and also starring Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace Moretz.

“The reasons why people make films here in France are very different from the reasons why people make movies in Hollywood and I prefer it here a little bit,” Stewart said backstage, talking about the courage of French filmmakers. She also revealed she will star in another French film but declined to reveal any further details.

“Clouds of Sils Maria,” in which Binoche plays an actress who agrees to appear in a revival of a play that launched her career 20 years earlier, premiered in Cannes last year and was nominated for six Cesars including lead actress for Binoche, best film and director. Stewart plays Binoche’s assistant in the drama.

Sean Penn was also on hand to receive an honorary Cesar.

  1. Wanda says:

Go figure, people have a bad reaction to racist behavior who would have thought it.

  2. Who is that awful jerk who slammed her trophy down?? Her hands were shaking dude.

    • Sinn says:

Some bad boy rapper, can’t remember his name, strongly disliked among the general French public, as can be seen in comment sections of newspapers regarding this event. There were even articles written about his behavior, when handing out the award, considered embarrassing, uncultured and rude. Some people found it hilarious because he couldn’t understand and how confused he looked. Others just pointed out that Kristen didn’t care anyway so it’s a non-issue and not even worth talking about.

  3. Ligxy says:

Why are people saying Kristen Stewart is the first American actress to win a César? Meryl Streep won a César award in 2003

    • mary says:

not in the ceremony itself the life chievement is a different part is the same that won sean penn but for the ceremony are only elegible french films stewart is the first to win in the ceremony

  4. I think it´s high time Kristen´s Stewart´s effort as an actress had been recognized…What na accomplishment!! Congratulations!! May this be the first of many in your carreer

  5. Kristen I am so proud of you. Please pay no attention to all the people spewing hatred towards you. They are jealous and spiteful. You were polite, beautiful and all of France loves you. Tres, tres jolie.

  6. Terri says:

She is brilliant in Clouds of Sils Maria. I hope her and Juliette work together again. Gorgeous dress!

  7. Laura R says:

Se seemed to have known she would win. I don’t buy the faux surprise and prepared speech. But I could be wrong. Didn’t Chanel finance this movie? Nothing better than an award for publicity. Any way, she was a joke. The speech, the dress, the bad manners with the award, all cringeworthy. The French must be horrified. I think that scream at the end said it all.

    • Jessica says:

She prepared the French part only, to apologize for the fact that she doesn’t speak French. She was definitely nervous, but her speech was nothing but gratitude to the producer, director, and star of the movie. She was completely humble. The scream at the end was the guy who presented it to her, and she let out a little whoop in response. The French are anything but horrified — since her nomination, most expected her to win and WANTED her to win.

And LOL if you think Chanel somehow got the award for her. Stay bitter.

    • Vladimir says:

She used the paper for the French words only, which didn’t have anything to do with her winning the award. She could just as well have prepared it for when she was to present.

    • Angela says:

Bitter much? Kristen has received wonderful reviews for COSM and Still Alice. Critics who once wrote her off took notice of how talented she truly she is and it just kills haters like you. Kristen earned this well deserved award. Go cry in your corner or go back under your rock.

    • Terri says:

Laura R – What a really sour and odd comment. Go and get your rocks off on ONTD where the lowest common denominator go to spread hate to feel better about their lives. Kristen is so above that nonsense.

      Buh Bye!

    • LOL says:

lol, you are so hurt, aren’t you?

    • sean says:

Really…….you think so?I could have thought chanel would buy the award for gaspard ulliel, face of blue d’ chanel. You just badmouthed french film academy; chanel just bcoz you dont like an actress, who got a well deserved award.

  8. MandyC says:

    Congratulations Kristen !!!
I am so happy for you
I know how much love you have for acting,
all these years, the hard work, the effort you gave hadn’t gone unnoticed.
We all know that you probably are one of those most misunderstood actress these, and how much pressure you have on your shoulders. But you never give up.
You deserve this kind of recognition.

  9. Angela says:

So sad and telling how low and vile people can be when they write and verbally spew hatred about a person they have never met and will never meet. Kristen Stewart is not the only human being targeted with such hatred. How sad that our society behaves so inhumanely and is so easily accepted. it’s for this reason responsible parents monitor their children’s use of this medium….it can be a source of vile behavior and opinion. Let’s lift up people instead of denigrating them. I say congratulation Kristen! Job well done! You shine!!

  10. I am so happy for Kristen. Although some of her performances aren’t anything to write home about and some of them are laughable, I do think she is an actress who has talent. Some of her performances were extremely good and apparently the French film makers who voted for her think her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria was good enough to win. Congratulations young lady!!! I am a fan.

  11. Akiko says:

Congratulations to Stewart, good for her. What an accomplishment. Reading through the comments, have to say I like her acting – I’m not into the hambone, face mugging, over-gesturing type that Americans are fond of for awards. The European style is more internal and I think she’s more in sync with their naturalistic style. I like her taste in movies a lot, there’s always something interesting there to think about.

  12. Duder NME says:

Judging by the music played during her walk, I didn’t realize that “Cloud of Sils Maria” translates to “Iron Man 3”.

  13. lulu says:

  14. diana says:

CONGRATULATIONS KRISTEN!!! Epic win and well deserved. Your millions of fans around the world are so proud of you…m

  15. Abigai9l says:

So happy for the fantastic Kristen Stewart!! She has been in so, so many amazing movies and as a long time fan this is very well deserved. Look forward to seeing this movie and all her future ones as well.

  16. Atomic Fury says:

    Well…..that’s France for you.

  17. Guest says:

Man, France has some low standards

  18. nerdrage says:

So Kristen Stewart is the best actress America has ever produced. Take that, Meryl Streep, you old hag! And you too, Katherine Hepburn…oh well, these are the same people who think Jerry Lewis is a genius, so go figure.

    • Nathan says:

You do realize that only French films are considered? It’s a great honor and there are tons of fabulous european and french actresses but the american thing is a bit pointless. They aren’t saying she’s the best american actress ever, they are saying she won an award amongst the european film crowd for being in a european movie. The American thing is just a bigger headline.

    • Guest says:

You are the one saying that and I noticed you sarcasm.
People are only saying she’s the first to win which is a fact, and that she’s also a good actress, Well, she got rave reviews from her performance so.. no need for you to freak out on anybody, stay pressed.

Btw, it’s not like in America great performances are not often snubbed for lack of campaign. Nobody (who has a brain working) thinks that by winning an Oscar means you are the best actor or even the best of the year, it’s still a great honor reggardless, because they don’t award bad performances and it’s a great sign for any actor, the Cesar works similarly in terms of honor.

    • Gabriel Herdeiro Martini says:

César Awards only goes to French-Produced Movies, Meryl Streep and Katharine Hepburn couldn’t ever be nominated

  19. Gabriel Herdeiro Martini says:

I think she’s a pretty lousy actress, but she was INCREDIBLE in Clouds of SIls Maria, her chemistry with Binoche was great! Well deserved!

    • Ya says:

I’d say her performance is ups and downs. But I think she deserves this award for this movie. People are forgetting that actors won for the particular movie, not for their entire performance in their lifetime.

  20. Steve says:

I don’t think her lame acting would ever get her an award here in the states. She’s pretty awful.

  21. Freya says:

Lol sorry Michael, Kristen has more than one fan.

    • Vladimir says:

Wow, another ignorant American who thinks that there aren’t any good actresses in Europe who Kristen competed with. She has received rave reviews in the states too for her role, so just you wait.

  22. Eclectic Gal says:

Thrilled Stewart is getting the accolades she deserves.

  23. michael Anthony says:

One could suspect the majority of comments are by the same person. All these congrats “look” the same. I wish Variety would monitor for this sort of posting. It’s idiotic.

    • Gilda says:

Nobody cares about Robert Pattinson, so nobody cares she cheated on him. If she cheated on someone like Dicaprio, then maybe her career would be dead, but no, it wasn’t and she’s doing fine and it’s likely to get better.

    • Nikola6 says:

Right. That’s why Elizabeth Taylor won after taking Eddie Fisher away from Debbie Reynolds, leaving her with a toddler and an infant. Or when Ingrid Bergman left her husband and baby daughter and ran off with Roberto Rossilini whose baby she was carrying. Yeah, she was run out of puritanical America, but the Academy welcomed her back six years later and handed her an Oscar. Hollywood doesn’t care who people are sleeping with or why. That’s the business of the tabloid culture and morally superior and judgemental the public they spoon food.

    • Bruno says:

You are the copy/paste troll feat. robfan and you do it all the time by lefting uncountable hating comments with different nicknames with the same writing/arguments style.
Anybody can go on twitter and see she has thousands of fans, including in America, so your argument is invalid.

    • Guest says:

Check out on Twitter, you’ll see A LOT of people congratulating her, so it could easily be the same case here. I do have 3 comments on here (not all congratulating her, just ONE), so.

    • guest says:

I’m from America and I have left one congratulatory comment here,

  24. sean says:

    Well deserved !!

  25. jean todd says:

Congratulations kristen..I just knew you would do you and all your work..

  26. Guest says:

Wow, the haters will go crazy, wait and you see some crazy saying “Channel bought it” or “She bought it” or they only did it for same lame reason. But anyway, the fact will forever stand, congrats to her.

    • Teal says:

Um… no one is saying that, but by all means continue to act like Kristen Stewart is persecuted everywhere instead of dealing with reality.

      • Guest says:

They said it when she got nominated.. soo.. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep saying that kind of stuff after her win. She’s not persecuted everywhere, but she does have some very loud and irrational haters on the net.

  27. vtrn33 says:

Congrats to Kristen!! She so deserved the recognition. Can’t wait to see the film.
