NBC Universal On Board For J-Horror Revival ‘Sadako Versus Kayako’

TOKYO — Media powerhouse Kadokawa and NBCUniversal Japan are partnering to make “Sadako versus Kayako,” a film featuring the vengeful female ghosts of two hit J-Horror series – “The Ring” (Sadako) and “The Grudge” (Kayako).

Starring Mizuki Yamamoto and directed by horror specialist Koji Shiraishi, whose credits include the controversial 2009 shocker “Grotesque,” the film is already in production.

It is set for a June 2016 release, with Kadokawa distributing and screenings in 4D are planned.

Both series have inspired Hollywood remakes and fueled the worldwide J-Horror boom, though in recent years hits have become more elusive.

This project began life as an April Fool’s gag, but became a reality when strong fan interest prompted a rethink from producers.
