Japan Box Office: ‘Galaxy Turnpike’ Wins Second Weekend

TOKYO – The Koki Mitani sci-fi comedy “Galaxy Turnpike” won its second straight weekend at the Japanese box office. It earned $1.5 million on 157,000 admissions in the Oct. 31-Nov. 1 frame to boost its nine-day cumulative total to $5.8 million.

The Toho-distributed film benefitted from Sunday falling on the first of the month, with filmgoers flocking to theaters for lower ticket prices, a monthly industry promotion.

Leading the new entries to the top ten, at number two, was “Pan,” which bowed on 672 screens with Warner distributing. Boosted by the family audience, the film took $1.3 million from 121,000 admissions and is expected to finish north of the $8 million mark.

Opening at number three was “My Love Story!!,” a live-action high school comedy based on a popular comic series. Opening on 292 screens with Toho distributing, the film scored $1.1 million from 119,000 admissions, with teenaged female fans of the comic and star Ryohei Suzuki attending in large numbers.
