Japan Box Office: ‘Cinderella’ Wins Fourth Weekend

TOKYO – “Cinderella” won its fourth straight weekend at the Japanese box office, finishing the May 16-17 frame with $2.63 million from 234,000 admissions. A big factor in the film’s success is the Japanese version of the theme song “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” sung by Mitsuki Takahata. She recently performed on primetime TV. The film’s total now stands at $33.4 million on 3.16 million admissions.

“Biri Gal,” a drama about a slow learner’s quest to enter an elite university, held onto its number two rank. Its cumulative total expanded to $12.3 million from 1.2 million admissions as of its 16th day of release.

“Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen,” Takeshi Kitano’s comedy about aged gangsters gathering for a last, violent hurrah, surpassed the 1 million attendance landmark and $10 million at the box office on its 21st day of release (May 15). The film is poised to beat the $12 million recorded by Kitano’s second most successful film, “Outrage Beyond.” Kitano’s most successful film, “Zatoichi,” took $23.8 million.
